Students’ security considered as University lighting reduced By ANNA FANG Of the Emerald “I think it is important as a state agency to follow Gov. Tom McCall’s policy toward regulating electricity during our recent energy crisis. To that extent, reduced lighting is a desirable thing as long as the safety and security of the dorm residences are maintained,” Greg Leo, ASUO president said Wednesday on the issue of reduced lighting around campus. Leo feels that three main things must be done on campus to save energy. First, incandescent bulbs should be replaced with neon bulbs; and secondly lighting should be used as a safety tool, yet preserving the aesthetic values. According to the ASUO president, incandescent bulbs use more electricity, and are im practical during an energy crisis. Thirdly, Leo thinks that the security of campus residents can be enhanced by the placement of several emergency phones around campus. Leo explained, in cases of assault and accidents, victims have no way of reaching help. Six emergency phones would be useful and essential to campus safety. The phones, said Leo, may reduce the need for lighting in some areas. Leo asserts that the University Open Space Committee has not acted on his suggestion for in stallment of six emergency phones. Campus security chief Oakley Glenn responded to the energy problem by explaining that lighting has been reduced around Johnson Hall, but maintained in well-used areas such as pathways from the EMU to the library, and PLC to library and dorm areas. Glenn added, “Exterior lighting is used as a security tool, and the crime rate around campus has been stable even with the reduction of lighting.” He cautioned students to observe well-lighted areas at night and to travel in groups or pairs. Leland Lorange, associate director of the Physical Plant, stated that the Physical Plant itself has reduced mercury-vapor Oakley Glenn lighting around the plant, and that each University department gives the Physical Plant ap proval to reduce lighting in its particular area. Lorange added that decorative and non-security lights around campus will be reduced with approval from each University department. County Commissioners accept airport plan Acceptance of the master plan report for Mahlon Sweet Airport, Spock joins feminists New York, Oct. 17—Dr. Ben jamin Spock today joined the ranks of the women’s liberationists by declaring in the November issue of Redbook magazine, just released, that he will use “she” and “her” to cover both boy and girl in his future writings, just as “he” and “him” have been used in the past. The noted pediatrician, who has been strongly criticized as a ,“sexist” by members of the Women’s Liberation Movement, explained that the Movement has made him aware of the many injustices against women. "The (generic) use of the male pronoun is one of the many examples of discrimination, each of which may seem of small consequence in itself but which, when added up, help to keep women at an enormous disad vantage—in employment, in the courts, in the universities and in conventional social life,” Spock said. Admitting that his solution to the problem may confuse some people, Spock argued, “It has the special virtue of reminding people how much girls and women have been cheated. Spock, who writes a monthly column for Redbook, said that in his search for a more equitable reference to members of both sexes, he considered using “an illegitimate hybrid, ’s-he.’ Though it would irritate many people, it has a neatness to it. But there is no similar way to con dense ‘her-him’ or ‘her-his.’” in accordance with the 1990 plan, was the main action at the Wednesday meeting of the Lane County Board of Commissioners. The plan is the culmination of a two-year study commissioned by Lane Council of Governments. Preparation of the master plan report was aided financially through a federal grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The principal goal of the study effort was to prepare a short, medium and long-range (5,10, and 20 years) plan of develop ment for Mahlon Sweet Field consistent with demands for air transportation services and facilities, shown by uses of the airport. The plan seeks to maximize the social and economic contributions of the airport to the community it serves. Another major goal of study was to plan for the uses of land on the airport property and to provide policy guidelines regarding future land uses of the airport in areas affected by aircraft operations and ob struction clearance criteria as set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration. Guidelines in the report provide the basis for implementation of zoning or dinances for height regulation and building and housing codes for the reduction of noise pollution. The master plan report con cludes that Mahlon Sweet Field is capable of expansion at its present location to accomodate the forecasted traffic and ac tivities through the planning period of 1990. The expected annual increase of plane passengers from the 1971 level of 91,676 to 500,000 by 1990 explains the expected need for expansion of services. Since there is ample area for expansion of the passenger terminal, general aviation facilities and support facilities on the east side within the airport boundaries, no demand or requirement is foreseen for reservation of land close to the airport for intensive develop ment. This means that Mahlon Sweet Field will have the least damaging environmental impact possible on the surrounding area. Mahlon Sweet Field will continue to serve Lane County and ad jacent areas as the sole air carrier airport and as the major general aviation airport through the 1990 period.
