Paul Dull never bored his students By BOB GALVIN Of the Emerald “Retirement can be a traumatic experience. When I walk off this campus, that’s it,” said Paul Dull. Dull, a professor of history at the University, is retiring in June after 27 years at the University. He says he is not bored after teaching all these years, but he is ready for a change in his life. The professor has wanted to be more involved with his students and at the same time carry out research in areas which interest him at the present. He is sorry he has been unable to tackle both of these interests during his tenure at the University. Students who took the professor’s classes in East Asian history found them anything but dull. His classes made the history, politics and intrigue of the Far East come alive. Dull, a pioneer historian in the field of East Asian relations, was in East Asia — Japan, Man churia. Korea, China — in pre-World War II years. One of the few westerners who knew the languages in those years, he was able to assimilate the political history and military involvement of the area. His remarkable talent for teaching received notice at the University in 1958 when he was awarded one of the first Ersted Awards for Distinguished Teaching. His classes always have bad a large attendance and are expanded for at least two lectures each year. Not only do the enrolled students attend, but any extra space is filled by drop-in students who have heard the word When Dull arrived at the University in 1946 there was no East Asian studies curriculum. He built the field. The University was the first in stitution in the state to otter the studies, and remains the only place in Oregon where a student can get such training. Dull has been teaching for a total of 37 years. He taught at the University of Washington and once at Stanford. He took time out to serve in the Marines during the war, and was assigned to duty in the Pacific Theatre because of his knowledge of East Asia and of the languages. Those who know him agree that Dull is a character. He might even be called eccentric because of his fanatical regard for teaching. “I put everything I have into my teaching,” Dull says. He considers the profession to be one of “psychological warfare.” He is concerned about how to instill what he knows into the students. If he sees students sitting back in their chairs, he says, he knows he is losing. But if the students are sitting on the edge of their seats, listening anxiously, he feels like a winner. “You have to have a love of your profession and you have to make it live,” said Dull. He says he will “pull every trick I know to get the students in terested and to get the knowledge I have into them. ” Dull’s retirement will be a scholarly one. He will write a number of books he has been wanting to write for some years but could not squeeze in with his teaching load. Before he starts his research and writing routine, he and his wife will spend the summer in Eugene. In September they will move to Wattington, England, which is close to Oxford University and libraries where he can do his research. “I have about eight books I want to write,” Dull says. “One will be a history of the Japanese Navy and battles in World War II, from the Japanese viewpoint. Then I’ll write a biography of Japanese ships, and a book on the British navy in Asian waters.” Dull doesn’t want to be writing constantly after his retirement, however. He plans to do some traveling as well. “I’m not going to tell people I’m retired when they ask me,” he says. “I’ll just tell them I’m free lance living.” Dull says he reflects on his past years of teaching at the University with a deep feeling of satisfaction and relief. “I’ve enjoyed tremendously my 27 years of teaching at the University. I’ve enjoyed the almost 10,000 students that I’ve had. I’ve enjoyed the company of my colleagues. It’s been a great life. I’m glad I chose it. It’s changing and I’m glad I’m getting out,” Dull says.
