Erosion of Student Power - TTje University Ad ministration is attempting to erode student power in the University. Randy and Gloria oppose these at tempts by the University Administration: specifically: A. President Clark’s so-called ‘‘co-governance— proposal giving students 10 per cent vote in governing the University. Any co-governance proposal which doesn’t equalize student power with Administration • Faculty power is unacceptable to Shilts and Gonzalez. B. The proposed so-called “cultural centers.” Hiis proposal erodes student control over student programs and co-opts student power. 3. Shilts and Gonzalez support humanistic concert such as: A. Women’s Rights-Women’s Studies B. Housing C. Daycare D. Gay Rights E. Environmental Programs F. Minority Programs G. Innovative Education 4. Randy and Gloria pledge to stay on their jobs in Eugene and not to spend the majority of their time in Salem so ASUO policies aren’t set and regulated by non-elec ted student and University bureaucrats as happened with Wyatt-Loveys. Vice-President Dwighht Schwab 1090 East Alder Street 342-7737 Freshman - Journalism Statement: Vote: Dwight Schwab - Open Government -posted bulletings of official business and decisions -open information meetings -collective thinking and action Being my first year at the University of Oregon, my ideas and thoughts have been quickly shaped by the campus environment and students around me. I’ve all but too often seen a person run for office and the prestige of the position rather than the reason for it. My main goal, if elected vice-president of the Sophomore Class, is to provide a sound basis for a student government. I believe that students of this university deserve a more active leadership that is free of standardized thinking and ideas. A leadership of fresh thinkers that are still immune to political cliques should be demanded by the Student-Body of Oregon, and, if elected, I pledge to bring in the fresh ideas and the sound judgment needed to occupy the position of Vice-President. I pledge to make my position one of trust and respect and work for the day that the Sophomore Class or for that matter, any class, is able to understand exactly what their leaders are doing through pasted bulletins ana open information meetings and discussions. TTie position of vice-president has been occupied too long by people interested in the title and not the responsibility. Please help me achieve this goal by voting for my thoughts, and not my name in the primary Tuesday, April 17th. b. junior Junior Class President Bill Davis Beta Theta Pi 729 East 11th Street 686- 5179 Sophomore - History Statement: Junior class officers have the primary responsibility for organizing the annual Parent’s Weekend. The past few years have seen this as the only activity in which the Junior Class has been engaged. There .should be continual sponsorship of programs that would be a benefit to the University community. This can only be done if class officers actively engage in meaningful programs coordinated by each class, working in harmony, throughout the year. Programs sponsored by the Junior Class should en courage utilization of such services as the Cultural Forum for activities, that would interest a larger segment of the University. In a larger sense, it’s time class offices re-established meaningful inputs into the ASUO organization, rather than existing as traditional dead wood. This change must be made to make class officers worthwhile, with the evolving of responsibilities in the ASUO; class of ficers working as concerned students, can be effective in ASUO. Jim Davis 1877 Emerald No. 35 687- 0586 Junior - Political Science Speech Statement: I’m running for Junior Class President because I feel what 1 accomplished as Sophomore Class President is worthy of being continued. This included a successful Great Race For Muscular Dystrophy, numerous events for the Heart Association, an elderly program, and a Oregon Daily Emerald , successful food drive for the poor (dose to 2 tons of food). What I hope to accomplish for the Junior Class would be similar in that I would want: 1. Fundraising events f or the Heart Association 2. Continuation of the elderly program 3. Continuation of the food drive for the poor 4. And, including an improved parents weekend. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from Sophomore government this past year, and I only hope that I will be able to improve on what I’ve already gained. McFarland 1584 Alder Street Delta Gamma 344-6814 Sophomore - Journalism Statement: As Junior Class Vice-President, my goals would be to interest and involve our class in activities that would serve our class, campus, and community. For Parent’s Weekend, the chief responsibility of the Junior Class, I would work for more university planned events such as movies, a street fair, campus tours, and guest speakers I would also like to continue the projects that 1 have worked on this past year as a member of the Sophomore Class Council: Raising money for the heart fund and sponsoring another food drive for emergency relief in the Eugene area. I believe that the class councils should work together and be aware of each other’s activities to form an ef fective means of serving and interesting Oregon students. Gene Pronovost 105 Boynton . Ally Nuschy 1518 Kincaid 686-4128 Junior - History Statement: After being a vice president for two years, I have come to the conclusion thU being president is the best way to accomplish your goals for office. My goals for senior year are as follows: —A working Board made up of the class officers to use the resources made available in an effort to work for their classes. -Pre-registration for seniors in classes they must have to graduate —Office hours set up for the class officers enabling greater input of ideas from members of the student body. —More visability for and better placement counseling services for graduating seniors. There really aren’t a lot of huge, tremendous things we can accomplish as seniors, but there are ways to help the senior in preparing for graduation and this is the area my main interests lie. Fred Wasson 301 McAlister-Walten 686-0626 Junior - Business Finance Statement: The duties of the Senior Class President are to work with the Alumni, to help in the planning of spring graduation, and to make the last year of college a little more bearable for the Senior Class, through programs of his or ho* own initiative. I’m experienced in this type of work. My sophomore year, I was on the sophomore class council and was dorm fund coordinator for the Great Race. I’ve been an ASUO senator, Fiscal Committee member, Community Affairs Committee member and chairman, and ASUO Representative to the Eugene City Council. I want the position, but please look over the voters’ guide statements of the other candidates and make a thoughtful choice. HARLEY LEIBER ON THE VITAL ISSUES OF OUR TIME: As I see the issues, they are only issues. An issue is anything that benefits my campaign. Dan Neal 745 East 15th No. 30A 342-3850 Junior - Political Science Statement: Why do we need a Senior Class President? Perhaps we don’t. Now, the president’s paramount obligation is with alumni relations. That’s fine, but I don’t think it’s enough. I’ve got some new ideas about how the office can take on expanded importance. Step One has already been taken . . . Class Presidents now serve on the executive’s cabinet. With the abolition of the Senate, a commensurate increase in the power of the executive and his cabinet comes. That means that the classes have more influence on the policies of the ASUO. They may affect the allocation of the incidental fee. As a former member of the Program Director’s Council, I could certainly contribute in the effort to economize so that we all might save. Another duty the Senior Class should be undertaken is to provide a service to help students cut the red-tape which surrounds the University bureaucracy. We need a collective, authoritative organization to provide such a service. I believe that class government should serve as ombudsmen. We should also support such meritorious causes as restoration of the Mill Race and a tavern in the Emu. We don’t need class government if it is without impact. Please give me the opportunity to inject meaning into this system. Page ll
