FROSH STEVE ROSKAM ON THE RINGS Powerful Indiana St. looms as Ducks set trip to midwest By MIKE YORKEY Of the Emerald If the University of Oregon athletic department was on the Chinese New Year system, 1972 73 could clearly be referred to as the Year of thle Freshmen. With the varsity football and basketball teams staffed by a plethora of first-year men, it comes as no surprise that Oregon’s excellent gymnastic team is equally being dominated by a bevy of freshmen. Coach Bill Ballester of the Flying Ducks, in his second year at the helm, is using a total of nine freshmen in his thirteen man squad, due to injuries to two key upperclassmen, Trey McDowell and John Lehmann. “We feel we are the darkhorse team in the Pac-8,” said Ballester. “We are using a lot of freshmen like Harter and Enright, and out of the thirty events in our meets, twenty-five are done by fresh men.” Don and Jim Lester are two freshmen on the pommel horse, along with Mike Luzny. Tom Phillips and Steve Roskam, also freshmen, compete in the all around exercises. With talent comes ex perience, and to get that ex perience, Ballester put his young team through an “ordeal” last Saturday. The Flying Ducks traveled to Chico State in one day, beating them rather easily in the process, 154.15-190.20, for their third consecutive win. They immediately drove back that night. “It was a good learning experience for us. The gym was standing room only down there, 3,500 people, they were boisterous, and the meet was an ordeal for us. The score was a lot closer than I thought it would be, but we came close to the school record. I feel we improved significantly from the week before,” said Ballester. The learning process could produce dividends this weekend when the gymnastic squad takes off on an important road trip to the Midwest States and Colorado. On Friday night they take an two teams at once, Wheaton College and Ball State, two Indiana contingents. This is all under the guise of a “double dual meet,” with each team trying to outpoint each other. Saturday night should prove to be most interesting for the Ducks, when they are pitted against Indiana State, winner of the NCAA’s last year, and the number two team in the nation. Ballester observed, “Those meets in the Midwest serve a dual purpose fen- us. We compete, of course, but we also recruit there.’’ Indiana and Illinois both have a well-deserved reputation of being hotbeds for gymnastics, and for the Ducks, it is no ex ception. There are five men from Illinois and Missouri, and three from Colorado on the gymnastic roster.
