The $1,000 awards were presented at the University’s commencement exercises June 11. The teaching prizes are provided through a memorial trust fund from A.J. Ersted of Atherton, California, who wanted the money used to encourage and reward distinguished faculty. He asked that it be given faculty who have demonstrated exceptional ability to induce students to reason rather than to memorize. In Ersted’s words, the awards should “stimulate an interest in inspired teaching in the classroom and in conference.” Carolin Keutzer Kwangjai Park Professors Keutzer and Park from nominations made by were chosen by a committee faculty, students and alumni.
