By JOHN ANDERSON For the Emerald Oregon State’s Scott Massingill rolled in a seven-foot par putt on the final hole Tuesday to edge Oregon’s Doug Roxburgh for individual honors in the Pacific-8 Conference Golf Championships at the Eugene Country Club. A few minutes earlier, Southern California clinched the team title with a magnificent, come-from-behind second day effort. The Trojans finished with a four-man, 72-hold total of 1191. Oregon placed second for the second straight year, at 1197, while first-day leaders Stanford faltered to a third-place 1205 total. Massingill had a 72-hold total of 292, one stroke better than Roxburgh. Massingill’s medal-winning putt on the par four ninth hole came shortly after poor tee and iron shots had put his title hopes in serious jeopardy. Massingill’s tee shot hooked behind a tree, and his ensuing iron shot carried into some sawdust about 50 feet from the last green. But the OSU golfer chipped to within seven feet of the hole with a spectacular shot, and Rox burgh’s chip rolled some 25 feet beyond the pin. Roxburth’s en suing putt was short, Massingill’s was good, and the individual battle was over. Southern Cal was in fourth place after Monday’s opening 36 holes. The Trojans were 11 strokes behind Stanford, six behind the Ducks, who had a 603 total. But an outstanding team effort, paced by Alan Tapie’s 70, carried the Trojans into a two-stroke lead after 54 holes. Gary Sanders fired a 72, and three other USC divot men had 74s. Incredibly, the Trojans shot one stroke better on the last 18. Tapie had a 71, and other USC golfers turned in 72, 73, 74, 74. Oregon, meanwhile, was playing well, but not good enough. Dave Glenz recovered from a disastrous first round 82, following a second round 73 with a 70-70, tying him for third place individually at 295. Craig Griswold, the 1970 co-medalist, came in with a 74-76 for a 298 total.
