JV's please coach Huskies dismantle rowers By WES STINSON Of the Emerald Washington’s highly touted crew squads dealt a lesson in rowing to Oregon’s young oars men Saturday at Dexter Lake by sweeping three first places and breaking a course record. The purple and gold UW frosh crew, with a strong wind at their backs, streaked to a 6:24.0 clock ing over the 2,000 meter course in their record effort. The Oregon freshmen could do no better than third in the three boat race. The speedy Husky varsity mean while won their race by jumping off to an early lead and never Amstel advances; Thorpe takes 3rd With ten minutes remaining in the game and the Amstel soccer club on the long end of a 3-0 score, opponent St. Patricks of Portland tied it up and forced two overtimes before falling 4-3 to the Oregon club in the semi finals of the Johnstone Cup Sun day in Portland. The Amstels, an Oregon club comprised of graduate students, earned the right to play sports club Germania of Portland for the Johnstone Cup Sunday. In other club sports activity last weekend three members from Oregon’s judo club competed at Medford Saturday in the Med ford Invitational Black Belt open meet. Coach Larry Thorpe, a se nior, was the only player to place in the meet as he captured a third. MiiiiiiiiiimiiimiiHimmiMiiimii letting up their quick stroke. Stan ford finished second and Oregon State was third. A distant and disappointing last place finish was all th° D'^ks could muster in the tough race as they were never reauj in it. “When you have your backs to the rest of the race you are out because you have nobody to race against,” summed up Duck Coach Dave Thomsen after the meet. Thomsen stated that “I was disappointed after doing so well in the last two meets.” The Oregon varsity squad is now 2-2 for the season. This was the first race of the season for Coach Dick Erickson's number one ranked Huskies and prompted the modest Husky men tor to chirp, “We’re always pleas ed to come out alive.” Washing ton’s varsity rowers, with five members back from last year’s 'Z', Stamford lose in round-of-eight Two Duck netters were invited for the Men’s Indoor Northwest Open Invitational Tournament in Portland last weekend. Dave Staniford and Ron Zielinski won first round matches, but lost in the quarterfinals, “Z” losing to the number one player in the N.W., Jack Neer. The JV netters have evened their record at 3-3 with an impres sive 6-3 win over Roseburg High, winner of 80 consecutive high school and junior college matches. The women’s tennis team open ed their season April 16 with a 3-2 win over OCE. third place national team, are aiming towards the world meet in Ontario later this year. On the brighter side of the Oregon rowing scene Duck Coach Thomsen stated he was pleased with the performance turned in by the third-place JV rowers and noted, “This is the first time they have raced with Stanford.” Thomsen ended the conversa tion with a note of optimism, stat ing, “We’1'1 get Oregon State yet.” VARSITY—1, Washington 6:44.8; 2, Stanford 6:54.9; 3, Oregon State 7:01.0; 4, Oregon 7:31.0.
