Huskies dismantle rowers
By WES STINSON

Washington’s highly touted
crew squads dealt a lesson in
rowing to Oregon’s young oars
men Saturday at Dexter Lake by
sweeping three first places and
breaking a course record.
The purple and gold UW frosh
crew, with a strong wind at their
backs, streaked to a 6:24.0 clock
ing over the 2,000 meter course in
their record effort. The Oregon
freshmen could do no better than
third in the three boat race.

With ten minutes remaining in
the game and the Amstel soccer
club on the long end of a 3-0
score, opponent St. Patricks of
Portland tied it up and forced
two overtimes before falling 4-3
to the Oregon club in the semi
finals of the Johnstone Cup Sun
day in Portland.
The Amstels, an Oregon club
comprised of graduate students,
earned the right to play sports

the Johnstone Cup Sunday.
In other club sports activity
last weekend three members from
Oregon’s judo club competed at
Medford Saturday in the Med

meet. Coach Larry Thorpe, a se

in the meet as he captured a

State was third.
A distant and disappointing last
place finish was all th° D'^ks
could muster in the tough race
as they were never reauj in it.
“When you have your backs
to the rest of the race you are
out because you have nobody to
race against,” summed up Duck
Coach Dave Thomsen after the
meet. Thomsen stated that “I
was disappointed after doing so
well in the last two meets.” The
Oregon varsity squad is now 2-2
for the season.
This was the first race of the
season for Coach Dick Erickson's
number one ranked Huskies and
prompted the modest Husky men

Two Duck netters were invited
for the Men’s Indoor Northwest
Open Invitational Tournament in
Portland last weekend. Dave
Staniford and Ron Zielinski won
first round matches, but lost in
the quarterfinals, “Z” losing to
the number one player in the

The JV netters have evened
their record at 3-3 with an impres

On the brighter side of the
Oregon rowing scene Duck Coach
Thomsen stated he was pleased
with the performance turned in
by the third-place JV rowers and
noted, “This is the first time
they have raced with Stanford.”
Thomsen ended the conversa
