' in;:iii!iii!i;;!!lilll!iill!Uiililllllllllllllllillllli::i::!' •;:iiii!i:illl!llll Peter, Paul, Mary own special spell' By CHRIS HOUGLUM Of the Emerald A white-thatched young witch and two war locks-in-residence—more commonly known as the folk trio of Peter, Paul, and Mary—wove their own special spell in Mac Court Friday night, and it was enough to spur an initially impatient au dience through successive stages of enthusiasm, adulation, and ultimately, enchantment. What took place went beyond any conventional concept of “stage presence,” “audience rapport,” or something similarly mundane. It was more on the order of a complete disintegration of the per former-audience gap, and a subsequent “Us” trip shared by the approximately 5,000 persons in at tendance. The event kicked off on a slightly ominous note, as the trio arrived late and spent some time tuning up before appearing on stage. This prompted a brief clapping and stomping demonstration by a segment of the main floor audience. But when the three performers galloped to the stage for a hand-in-hand first bow, the response was cordial, even enthusiastic. And when the' trio broke into the first strains of an accelerated “Moments of Soft Persuasion,” contact was as sured. Most of the selections which the trio performed were familiar, gleaned at random from the group’s eight albums, four of which have been pushed into the million-seller class. The same professional polish so evident in the recording studios of Warner Brothers was there too—the earnest, impeccable blend of shifting harmonic patterns, dominated by the clear, strid ent voice of Mary, beautifully supplemented by Peter’s tenor and Paul’s reserved bass; by the fresh clusters of chords turned on the men’s gui tars; by the nimble string bass artistry of ac companist Dick Kniss. There was humor, too, with Peter delivering an acerbic monologue on the interpretive twists given his song “Puff” in that wistful, almost pro fessorial manner of his, and Paul following with reminiscences flavored with folksy jocularity. But the spiritual oneness of observers and ob served came following intermission, when dozens of fans clustered about the foot of the stage for such poignant, pleading numbers “I Shall Be Re leased” and “Blowing in the Wind.” Then—among the clapping, cheering, and sing ing—came the realization of the affirmative qual ity of the trio’s love-hope message: affirmation not only of their art, or of the possibility of salvaging this big, sick, lonely country, but of the essential beauty of the performers themselves—a beauty which was. for a few wild minutes Friday, con tagious and complete.
