Knoke Runs Hurdles in 51.4 Few Highlights At Cold Meet Bv JOHN ANDERSON Of thr Emerald It was a terrible day for a track meet. The air was cold (48 degrees) and damp. It definitely hurt the performances. There were a few bright spots, though. Junior transfer Gary Knoke ran the 440-yard intermediate hurdles in 51 4. making him the second fastest intermediate hur dler in Duck history. Only one to go faster is Jerry Tarr. who sprinted the events in 50.3 sec onds in 1962. Bob Blum edged Knoke in the 120-yard high hurdles, both being timed in 14.0. Knoke’s eflort. a personal best, tied him for fourth in Duck history for the high hurdles. Blum’s top mark is 13.8. Tarr holds the Ore gon record at 13.3. Sophomore long jumper Tom Smith leaped a personal best of 24 feet. 7 inches. Smith set a Frosh record last year at 24 6r-». Dave Wilborn. all-time Ore gon mile record holder at 3: 56 2. moved into sixth on the two-mile list with a time of 8:55.7. He hit the halfway mark in 4:27. went by the seven-lap mark in just under 7:57, and took the final lap in 59 seconds. Meanwhile, former Oregon great Neal Steinhauer, station ed in San Francisco with the U.S Army, put the shot 65 feet. Hi inches. Earlier in the week, Duck coach Bill Bowerman had said he’d be happy to see Stein hauer throw 62 feet. “Super Duck.” as he was known, has a best of 68-1114, and is presently returning to form to prepare for the Olympic trials. Frosh Outdo Varsity Oregon freshmen competitors outdid the varsity in five events. Jim McMjllan pole vaulted 14-6 for first place: Gordon Clay’s 201-0 was third in javelin; War ren ChenShui placed second in triple jump at 45-6>2. 2*,4 inches off the Frosh record; Dennis McCullough high jumped 6-2 for second place in that event; and big Tim McAndrews finish ed third to Steinhauer in shot Sports Briefs All University athletes should sign up for the Spring Retreat (April 5 and 6) by Tuesday, April 2. The cold weather stalled their projected effort for four-minute miles, as Bowerman told them to take it easy. The trackmen were ap parently trying to cross the finish line together, but Kval heim finished about six inches in front and was timed one tenth second faster. Oregon Track Club’s Harry Jerome won the 100-yard dash, as expected, in 9.0, with the Ducks’ Mike Deibele second in 9 7 Deibele’s 21.4 220 was con siderably better than Jerome's time of 22.3. but the sprinters ran in different heats and no final-off was held. t’ouser Wins 440 Ron Couser and Bob Bauer finished 1-2 in the 440 with times of 48 8 and 49.4 Jere VanDyk won the 880 in 1:53.6, with Jim Reverman and Scott Taylor staging a close dual for second, Reverman coming out on top with a 1:54.6. The Ducks’ 440 relay team, consisting of Frank Marlatt, Bauer, Deibele and Blum, was timed in 41.7 2.7 better than Oregon Track Club’s mark. Myron Johnson, who finish ed third in intermediate hurdles, turned in a personal best of 55.1. Johnson set a Frosh record last year with a time of 55 4. IM Schedule SOFTBALL Rules: Nine players on a team. No spiked shoes may be worn. Games consist of five full innings, or four full innings if one team is seven or more runs ahead, or one hour time limit— whichever comes first. The umpire shall determine when the number of innings have been played or when the hour is ended. Postponements are not permitted unless ordered by IM Sports Department. Official softball rules will govern play, with above ex ceptions. 3:50—North Field—Sheldon vs. Stafford South Field—Douglass vs. DeCou Upper Field—Bean West vs. Willcox 4:55—North Field—Phi Kappa Psi. vs. Kappa Sigma South Field—Lambda Chi Alpha vs. Phi Gamma Delta Upper Field—Sigma Nu vs. Tau Kappa Epsilon TENNIS Rules: Tennis teams will consist of two doubles and one singles. Best two out of three wins the match. Score cards are available in intramural of fice. One player may not play both singles and doubles. Five men com pose a team. Matches must be played off and score cards must be turned in to the intramural office (135 PE) on or before the dates scheduled. Matches start at 4 p.m. on scheduled day on courts 5, 6, 7 or 8 of the Alder Street Courts only. Courts or benches will not be available before 4. Men IM players must not interfere with women’s tennis classes before 4. April 1—Pi Kappa Phi vs. Legal Eagles GOLF Rules: Teams will consist of four players in four twosomes. Unless otherwise agreed upon, matches will be played at Oakway Golf Course on the dates scheduled. Match score cards will be available at the IM of fice. Results of matches must be re ported on or before the dates sched uled. Scoring will be by the Nassau system.
