Guest Column Give the Rally A Break By TOM WESTBROOK Rally Hoard Chairman In llie pant, and at the* present, the Rally Squad of the I'niverehy of Oregon has been a group under constant criticism. Rnch year n myriad of opinions are voiced, directed to the in udrqtmctcs of these people. Perhaps the day for organized school participation is long out moded, hut I think not It appears that Oregon is a school of tradi tion Howe\er the only traditions thus established are rise and clap your hands to the light song, and ignore the Hally Squad . . unless of course the girls have short skirts. As a consequence. I uni appealing to you the students of this I'niverslty, to give yourselves, the Rally Squad, and the institu tion a break The members of the Rally Squad arrived in Eugene two weeks prior to the opening football game at Berkeley, which was four W'-rks before classes began. The Squad practiced twice daily dur ing this period, and raised their own funds enabling them to travel to lierkolcv in support of our team. These actions, as well as their extensive weekly prac tice-, during the season, demonstrate to me Dial this group does have pride in their position and its function All they can offer is their best, and work with what they have -the remainder is up tu you. As long as the student body backs the Rally, they cannot pos sibly look bad Yet, at the other end of the spectrum, no matter how good a rally squad is, without student support they cannot realize their potential. We ask a lot of him- -he's a runner, a pass receiver, and a blocker—and he does everything well.” That pretty much sums up the caliber of the Ducks' starting halfback, and nobody would know any better than his coach. So far this season Claxton has earned the ball 36 times for 151 yards and a respectable 3.80 aver age Ilis longest run from scrim mage was a 38 yarder in last week's loss to Ohio State. The junior backfield ace has also had six pass receptions for 137 yards of total offense (third on the team). I.ast year the 5-10, 200 pound ball carrier was plagued by in juries so he only played 60 min ules. In that time be scored one touchdown and gained nearly 200 yards rushing. Claxton. a David Douglas grad from Portland, is considered a strong runner with outstanding speed. He is a scoring threat from all positions and he has tre mendous ability to break tackles He said that he received of fers from many schools, but de cided to come to Eugene because he was impressed with the friend liness and the help of the coach ing staff. v As far as this season goes, he admitted that the school spirit is a little low. because of the team's losses, but added, “The team spirit is never low.” It’s hard to say what one thing caused a team to lose a game, but Claxton, a liberal arts Mallard Booters Battle Beavers Oregon’s Mallards open t h e Oregon Intercollegiate Soccer As sociation’s fifth season Saturday at Oregon State Game time is 11 am. The Mallards, the Oregon Soccer Club’s second team, will likely be meeting their biggest challenger for the league title in the Beavers. The teams tied for second place in the OISA last season, behind the undefeat ed Oregon Ducks who changed leagues this fall. Hans Buhrmann, Webfoot coach, will start the Mallard team which downed the Eugene Bavarians 4-3 in a practice Wednesday night. Mallard forwards include Yaakov Eden, Per Endresen, Rudolfo Klein, Randy Swangard. Eric Van der Hoven and Hugh Venables. Defensive players include Tony Herrera, Hans Lavell, Steve Lee. Joe Macca, Graham Mason. Norm Pressey and Kees Van Der Waer den. The Mallards travel to Univer sity of Portland next week and participate in the Washington State University Invitational Tournament October 27-28.
