Traditionally, Washington's out standing defensive players are awarded the purple headgear. Coach Jim Owens demands that only performers "who give tlO per cent" receive this honor. De fenders who fail to draw blood or crack a limb during the week's practice sessions are subjected to the humiliation of a gold he! met on game day. After the Huskies’ opening 17 7 loss to Nebraska, the defensive unit stabilized to the point of be coming one of the best on the Pacific Coast. Manke at QB Any question about who would open at quarterback for UW in tomorrow’s 1:30 p.m. Autzen Sta dium contest was cleared up when Owens announced he would stay with sensational soph Tom Manke The 6-0, 200 pounder is second in the PAC in total offense — an improving passer and power ful runner. The improving Wash ington offense is further bolstered by a deep and experienced line, with the standout here being tackle Bob Richardson, 6-3, 240. In the backfield, Manke teams up with returning halfbacks Carl Wojciechowski and Gerald Wea. fullbacks Jim McCabe and Tom Verti, and flankers Jim Cope and Harrison Wood. Oregon will welcome some i much needed help in the offen sive line, but once again will miss at least one regular in the start ing eleven. Smith at Center Ron Smith, a 230 pound junior from Los Angeles City College will play center. This should strengthen the offensive line, a ( weak-sister in the Oregon attack i all year. He has been out due to a knee injury and subsequent sur gery. The Duck* will probably have Dick Crowley back at tackle whore he played much of laat year. Crowley was pressed into service as a center due to lack of depth. Coach Jerry Frei has been try ing to bring his club up for their first winning performance of the season. Although 0-4 on the season, the Ducks have kept plugging and only greenness and youthful mistakes have kept them from winning. "If we can just put together a game with a minimum of mis takes, we’ll win a game," com mented Frei. Frei is expecting the return of Warner Wong, hut latest indi cations show that Denny Schuler will probably be out. Sophomore safety Cam Sinrlnir will probably be out for the year.
