Honors' Scholars
Delve Into Issues
After three hour* of discussion
this week, no definite solutions
were found to the problems fac
ing the Honors College.
The informal meeting of Hon
ors College professors, the stu
dent advisory board, and inter
ested students concerned itself
with a means of developing a
sound community of directors and
(Undents.
Lou Ward, professor of mathe
matics, was concerned with stu
dent identity and proposed that
some of the needed money be used
for separate facilities and possibly
a different dormitory "to pro
mote allegiance to the Honors
College.”
The main concerns of the dis
cussion were methods to increase
independent thinking and to up
grade the quality of teaching.
One faculty member said that
the professor has the problem of
whether to place research or
teaching first in importance, with
teaching often becoming second
It was generally agreed that the
Honors College faculty needs
prestige, which is often lost when
the professor devotes most of his
time to teaching.
In this concern for more inde
pendent thinking, the students
questioned the need for grades,
saying this created a feeling of

UO Will Host
Philosophy Meet
The University will host the
annual Oregon Colloquium in
Philosophy Friday through Sun
day in the Common Room of the
Faculty Club.
Friday at 3 p.m. Donald Da
vidson, Stanford University, will
speak on "How Is Weakness of
the Will Possible?” Following the
speech, Don Brown, University
of British Columbia, will comment
on it At 8 p.m. Chairman Rich
ard Henson, University of Utah,
will lead a discussion.
Saturday, Philippa Foot, Ox
ford University, will lecture on
"On Being Indifferent to Ques
tions of Right and Wrong” at
10:30 a m. Zeno Vendler, Univer
sity of Alberta, Calgary, will
comment. James Smith, Univer
sity of Washington, will lead a
discussion at 2:30 p.m.
“Wickedness" will be the top
ic of a speech by Joel Feinberg,
University of California, Los An
geles, at 10:30 am. on Sunday.
Ronald Milo, University of Ari
zona, will comment. A discussion
at 2:30 p.m. will be headed by
Chairman Renford Bambrough,
Cambridge University.

The need for the required com
prehensive exams at the end of
the year for all core courses was
alHo discussed. Many felt that the
function of drawing together all
the knowledge learned during the
year is superfluous because of
other opportunities to demon
strate knowledge. They said that
"students learn in different ways
and their method should not be
legislated." But others supported
them because they make it pos
sible for the student to study
on his own.
At the conclusion of the discus
sion, several ways were mention
ed to solve these problems. It was
thought that proposals could be
made by a small group and then
discussed by the existing com
mittee of faculty and students.
Outing Club
Sponsors Hike
The first event scheduled by
Oregon’s newly formed Outing
Club, a Sunday hike to Hardes
ty Mountain Lookout, will be the
main topic of discussion at a brief
Outing Club meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Friday in the Student Union.
In addition, information avail
able at this time on the club’s
forthcoming twoday outing, a
trip to Smith Rocks in Central j
Oregon, will be presented. Smith
Rocks is scheduled for the week- j
end of April 22-23 and is open:
to students and faculty. Signup
sheets will be available.
Signup sheets for the Hardesty
and Smith Rocks trips, plus sub
sequent Outing Club events, will
be placed on the bulletin board
in the geology annex of the
Science building and at the main
desk in the SU.
Students planning to make ei
ther trip are urged to attend the
meeting. Transportation, the
main problem of trip scheduling,
must be arranged, and students
with access to vehicles are urged
to step forward.
Those students unable to at
tend and wishing to make either
trip arc asked to call Doug New
man, trips chairman, to make ar
rangements.
Public Invited
To Suggest Plays
The public has been invited to
make suggestions for plays to be
produced by the University The
atre at the University during the
1967-68 season.
Anyone who has a preference
may leave his choices at the Uni
versity Theatre box office or in
the speech department office in
Villard Hall on campus. Deadline
for suggestions is Friday.
The University Theatre's play
selection committee will meet
soon to decide on plays for next
year.

Professor Returns
To Read Poetry
Stanley Cooperman, a widely
published poet of the Pacific
Northwest and a former assis
tant professor of English at the
University, will return to the
campus today as- a guest lec
turer.
He will lecture and read some
of his own poems at 8 p.m. in
the Student Union under the
sponsorship of the English De
partment.
