Northern Tourney Adler Confident of Win “We feel we have the best team and we should win it.” These were the words of first year golf coach Jack Adler com menting on the Ducks’ chances of copping this year’s Northern Division Golf Championships. The 72 hole tournament will work on a medal play basis with the total scores only determining the winner. This weekend Wash ington will host the first half of the tourney at the Seattle Country Club. Next week the scene will move to Corvallis on Friday and here, in Eugene the following day for the completion of the competi tion. Coach Adler has decided to go with Gay Davis, Mike Davis, Ralph Schafer, Don Morrow, Bill Debel lis. and Scott Smith. “If we play the kind of golf we're capable of playing, we’ll surely win it, Adler further said. Gay Davis captured the Ore gon Amateur Championship last summer. His brother, Mike, was last year’s low man with a 75. average. Commenting on the other teams, Adler said, “The competition will be close." The Oregon State r c* Cal Meet Toss-up Oregon’s track team has the prospect of another close home meet Saturday when they host the California Bears in their second con ference meet of the year. Last weekend the Ducks were upset 76-69 by Washington’s Hus kies in a meet that went down to the final relay and Saturday’s meet promises no less excitement. The Ducks will have to offset California’s strength in the jump ing events with their middle distance stars, Mike Crunican, Roscoe Divine, Wade Bell and Arne Kvalheim, and with their weight men, Neal Steinhauer and Bob Foskett. Last weekend against Southern California, the top rated track team in the nation, the Bears swept the triple jump, went one-two in the long jump, won the high jump and placed two-three in the pole vault. Two events, the three mile and the steeplechase have been added to the meet. Duck-Bear Track and Field Bests 100—UO' Mike Deibelle 9.7. I Frei said the nature of the scrimmage will depend on how much progress is made in the next three practices. "1 can't say how we’ll arrange things,” he remarked. "It probably won’t be the best offense against the best defense. It will be the first time we have eleven men against eleven men." "We’ll let everybody play," he added. The scrimmage has been set for between 11 a m. and noon on Saturday, following the regular practice. The team will also prac tice today and Friday. Frei said he plans "a lot more hitting” in the next few drills. "We’ll still be on the basics for a couple of weeks," he said. He was “very pleased" with the first practice Tuesday afternoon. "I was pleased with the excellent condition of the athletes, and their attitude,” stated Frei. "It looked like an enthusiastic, hustling, fighting group, and that's what we want.” "As far as techniques go.” he added, "We’re still learning the fundamentals, how to block and so forth." One of the highlights of the first day's practice was the kicking of Tom Blanchard, the triple threat quarterback of last season's frosh. Blanchard boomed several punts between 50 and 55 yards. Scott Cress, scoring and pass-catching leader for the varsity last season was the most notable absentee from the first drill. He Is a member of the baseball team.
