Football Trio Honored by Oregon Club By DAVE BARONTI EaeraM Sports Editor A defensive halfback known not so much for his natural ability as for his relentless determination to make the play was named winner of the Hoffman Award Monday night. The honor—which is given annually to 4ke player voted most outstanding on 4us football team — placed the winner Tim Temple in a list which in the past three years has included All-Americans Mel Renfro, Bob Berry, and Dave To bey. That award and two other major honors were given to three members of ■the football team at the squad's annual ■fsrewell appearance before the Oregon Club Monday night at the Eugene Hotel. George Dames, a 200-pound sopho more defensive guard who was—in Fac ulty-Athletic Representative Ray EUick •a»n's words a "160-pound lineman in high school"—was voted the Clarke award for •toeing the most improved player on the Senior tackle Jim KoUman -won the Order of the Tape Can” by trainer Bob Officer for “playing most proficiently de spite the handicap of injuries." The prizes climaxed an evening in which guest speakers George Shaw, El lickson, University President Arthur S. Flemming. Coach Len Casanova, and Portland sportscaster Jimmy Jones prais ed everyone connected with the team— the senior football players in particular— for their “outstanding" efforts during the 1966 and past seasons. “I have faith in these kids,” Casanova said, referring to a recently publicized comment by a former Oregon football player that members of the 1965 squad played for “room and board” motives "I am sure there were some on last year's squad who played for selfish rea son," Casanova said. “This is the case all over the country. “But this squad—I don't think any of these boys who could work like they did last winter . . . last spring . . . and on their own in summer didn't put out 100 per cent. You could tell when they came back for fall practice that they did everything they were supposed to. “There wasn’t one game where these kids didn't do as well as they possibly could_It makes you feel mighty proud to have been associated with them.” “As long as I live 1 will never forget the job that you did in the game against Stanford,” Flemming told the team. “This squad has been willing to travel the second mile in order to contribute to Tim Temple the institution ... I am proud of what you have done for this University ... I am proud of having been associated with Coach Casanova and (Athletic Director) Leo Harris.” Flemming continued. ‘‘We are think ing lonigm nui umy v> me pnm, uui in the future . . . next season we will have our stadium ready by September ... I am sure this University will defeat two schools with identical initials in that stadium. One is Ohio State University. The other is Oregon State.” Shaw, a former All-America quarter back at Oregon, and later a professional player for the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League, was also a past recipient of the lloflman Award, as he told Temple. Grinning modestly, Shaw delivered an enlivened talk, referring glowingly to the speakers before him. “Makes me feel like a situation 1 was in at Baltimore," Shaw laughed. "John ny Unites had just thrown five or six touchdown passes; we were leading about 40-0, and the coach would put his hand on my shoulder and say, 'George, you get in there and do better.’ ” However. Shaw was serious, too “I just hope the coaching stafT here at Ore gon stays healthy and intact in the years to come. Casey, who was a linebacker and a tri-captain for the Bomb ers, has been offered a pro con tract by the Oakland Raiders. At present, he hasn’t announced whether or not he intends to sign. Another member of the team, end Paul Burleson, already has signed with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. Burleson, who also played at Oregon, was Eugene's leading scorer with nine touchdowns. He pulled down 45 passes for 599 yards. Palm’s former Oregon teammate Dick Winn led the Bomber ground attack this season. He piled up 546 yards in 131 carries. Roger Daniels, who played for the Ducks in the late 1950's, top ped passing statistics with 99 of 196 for 1,365 yards. He threw 13 touchdown aerials.
