UT to Present Plays Alternately The University Theatre pre sents two plays on alternate nights to give patrons an addition al evening of theatre this year. Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology” opens Friday and fol lows November 16 and 18 and Dylan Thomas’ “Under Milk Wood” opens Saturday and plays November 17 and 19. Tickets $1.50 nights and $2 weekends, go on sale today. The box office opens at noon daily, at ext. 1781. ‘Spoon River Anthology’ Fresh from Broadway and a national tour, “Spoon River An thology” excited theatregoers all over America. Before Masters published his book in 1915, the small town often was pictured as an idealized world where people could do no wrong and was used as the setting for many a sen timental story or song. Masters, however, remembered the meanness and hypocrisy of the small town life of his boy hood along the Spoon River in Illinois. While a quiet and success ful lawyer in Chicago, he wrote his much acclaimed but contro versial book containing 200 bi ographies of the thwarted souls —drunkards and dreamers, skin flints and idealists, secret saints and private lechers — he had known. ‘Under Milk Wood’ In this unusual evening of words and songs — an evening made more exciting by color ful costumes and vivid, flashing projections—some of these peo ple speak for themselves. Benny Masters, Janet Dallin, Arthur Perlin, and Eileen Hayes. star in “Spoon River Anthol-j ogy.” Sabine Jerstad and Berry, Pomerantz sing; Nina Wood and Mike Lieber provide the music. If you saw the very success ful “Dylan,” you know how “Un der Milk Wood” came to be. Its survival is remarkable, for Dy lan Thomas didn’t complete it until within a month of his death; yet, he left a completed work which has since played all over the world. Dylan liked small towns by the sea best and small Welsh towns by the sea best of all. In one such town he captures with The University Theatre pre sents Dylan Thomas’ “Under Milk Wood*’ owing to the good audi ence reception and response to the production of “Dylan.’’ soaring language the eccentrici ties of its inhabitants—no heroes, no heroines, no villains, but merely people, individuals made universal through the magic of Thomas’ mind. Director Faber DeChaine now brings it to the University The atre in an exciting concert per formance where players assume many characters, each one differ ent, to reveal Dylan at his lyrical best. With language and music they portray his zest for life. Veteran to Perform Dave Steiner, veteran of the University Theatre’s “Dylan” and "Waiting for Godot,” and Bever ly Waldo, best remembered for her portrayal of the mother in “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” head the large cast of j “Under Milk Wood.” Others star-! ring are Val Grover, Francine j Reidy, Lloyd Porter, Ken Richard son, Hale Hetherington, Barbara Raecker, David Cash, and Millie Swanson. Both productions are present ed as exciting concert theatre, fully staged in a specious setting. Director DeChaine explains that, “both employ music, but neither is a musical; both have drama, al though neither is a drama; both are poetic, but neither is poetical. Pipers to Display Scottish Tradition The widely-known Royal High land Fusiliers, bagpipe regiment whose traditions go back to the 17th century, will perform at 8 p.ra. Tuesday in McArthur Court. In addition to its traditional pipe and drum music, marching displays, and highland dances, the kilted Fusiliers will also pre net a gymnastic show and com edy numbers. The show is sponsored by the Eugene and University Civic Mu sic Association, thus students with activity cards are admitted free. Minister to Talk On Viet Nam "Religion in Viet Nam: a Na tional Appraisal" will be the title of a talk given by the Reverend Richard Fernandez, Tuesday in the Dads' Room of the Student Union. The speech will be spon sored by the SU Forum Commit tee. Fernandez is the executive secretary for a national commit* tee called "Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Viet Nam,” headquartered in New York. The executive secretary's office is specifically charged with the responsibility of interpreting the current political situation as it develops, both in Washington and in Viet Nam, and attempting to clarify some of the ethical im plications involved in the politi cal realities in those sections of the world. Fernandez is also responsible for stimulating local groups of clergy and lay persons to such education -action programs as seem appropriate in various com munities across the country. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Fernan dez graduated' .from the Univer sity of New Hampshire in I960, and attended Andover Newton Theological School in Massachu setts. Beginning in 1964, he be came a campus minister at the University of Pennsylvania. In May of last year, he assumed the executive secretary position which he holds now.
