ROTC Cadet Corps Receive Awards By WII.KUK BISHOP Kmerald Contributor Thursday afternoon the com bined Army and Air Force ROTC cade t corps participated in a graduation review and awards as semhly, held in honor of the grad uating seniors in the Reserve Of ficers Training Corps program. University President Arthur S. Flemming and other members of the University administration, along with the parents of award winners, were the special guests of the University's military de partment. Preceding the graduation re view, Colonel Kmbert A. Possum, professor of military science, and Ft. Colonel John YV. Kreitz, pro fessor of aerospace studies, an nounced the following awards to be presented to cadets in the Army and Air Force ROTC pro gram. Following the presentation of awards to the cadets, President Flemming presented the Citizen ship Award to Gretchen Young, | president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. The citizenship cup is j presented annually to the Uni I versity living organization which has made the greatest contribu tion to campus, local, national,! and international citizenship. The Association of the U.S I Army medal was presented to! Robert G. McCoy. Reserve Offi cer's Association awards w e r e [ given to John R. Snodgrass, Jr and John L. Murdock III. Reserve Officers' Association Certificates of Achievement are presented annually to the upper 10 per cent of senior applicants for a reserve commission. Win ners of this award are .Jason I). Carroll, Haron C. Shcldahl, Jack L. Strayer, Loy B. Hamilton, Wil lium D. S a r fi c n t, and David Schildmeyer. Dynamics Award The Sons of the American Revo lution medal was presented to I’aul M. Felker and Kim A. Cald well. The General Dynamics award was previously presented to Arthur T. Hurley at the AF-ROTC Dining-In. Superior Cadet awards were presented to Baron C. Shcldahl, John It. Snodgrass, Jr , Frederick J. Itonnau, and William L. White, by Brigadier General Charles A. Pyle, U.S. Army (Retired). The Chicago Tribune ROTC' awards went to Edward M. Bui lard and Randall J. Mickey, who receive gold medals. Silver medal winners of this award were Michael T f.ogan and Michael W. Allison. The Air Force Times award was presented at the AF ROTC Dining In to Clayton M. Kirkland. The Jimmy Burleson, Jr. Schol arship award went to Randell C. (iuyer, Jr. The Merlin I. Carter Flying award, presented annually to the cadet with the most out standing record in the Air Force Flight Instruction Program, was presented to Peter O. Brown. The AUSA Military History award was received by Dave Rod man. Achievement awards, which are sponsored by the Eugene Cham ber of Commerce, are presented annually to a cadet in each ROTC class considered outstanding in scholarship and leadership per formance. These were presented to the following cadets: Frank S. Graham, Joseph T. Kinella, Ran dell C. Guyer Jr., Doyle G. Jor gensen, Oscar H. Hinsdale, Steven It. Ritchey, David E. Scott, and Roy S. Atchison. More Awards Drill proficiency awards for freshmen and sophomores were presented to Terry J. Carter, Ralph S. Burns, Douglas E. Mal ka.sian, and Victor L. Benson.' The Outstanding Air Force drill team member award was received by Donald L. Fisher. Aerospace Studies 2 drill team award recipient is Grant G. Ni colai Jr. Aerospace Studies 1 drill team award went to Steven H. Pearson. Army ROTC drill team member awards were received by Glen G. Gilbert and Douglas E. Malkasian. The Army ROTC Ranger award was won by Rodney G. Klinge. The Combat Proficiency award went to John R. Keen. National Rifle Association medal for achiev ing the highest score in small bore marksmanship was won by Walter B. Greenwood. Willamette Valley League Marksmanship trophies were pre sented to Michael D. McCartney, Walter B. Greenwood, Terry J. Carter, and Charles T. Ramsell. American Legion ROTC Gen eral Military Excellence awards were presented to Thomas H. Schick, Steven C. Manned, David R. Stevely, and Thomas J. Jaco bus, The American Legion ROTC Scholastic award is presented to ROTC cadets who have an aca demic average that places them in the upper 10 per cent of their class and who have participated actively in student activities, or ganizations, or sports. The re cipients of this award were Glen E. Brisbinc, Leonard M. Scholl Jr., Robert T. French, and Gar rett G. Y. Goo. Final Presentation A final award presentation was made by Lt. Colonel John W. Kreitz, to T-Sgt. Val B. Thornton, who was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal for Out standing Achievement. Following this award, the combined com plement of ROTC cadets passed in review, to recognize the as sembled officers and special guests. The afternoon program was climaxed by drill competition be tween the Army and Air Force’s drill teams, who were competing for the John Warren trophy. This year’s winner was the Army drill team.
