1Godot/ Films Await Students By STEVE DIMEO Entertainment Editor Waiting seems to be a life time preoccupation even for those who don't know what they are waiting for. If you’re one of the few who want to wait for something tangible, you might try tire meaningful but obscure University theatre production of Samuel Beckett’s "Waiting for Godot” opening tonight at 8 p.m. The only thing that could be said for certain about the tragi comedy is that it was written by the Irish-born Beckett and has become an avant - garde classic within the 13 years since its Paris opening. If that encourages large num bers, the fact that it has an all male cast of five may discourage the few who wait for other things. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday and Sunday nights. Three other per formances are scheduled for the same time March 3, 4, and 5. Tickets are $1.50 each. Oblivion Offered If waiting is what you want to forget about, the Saturday night SU rock ’n roll dance may be your preferred destination. George Segal (“The New In terns,” “Ship of Fools”) plays the | American Mr. Big in a Chinese Concert to Show New Composing Piano music of a new era will be illustrated by Franzpcter Goebels, director of the Studio for New Music in Dusseldorf, Germany, since 1947, at 4 p.m. Sunday in the School of Music auditorium, during the first of three concerts he is giving as part of the Festival of Arts. Goebels is a recognized author ity on theoretical and practical problems of new music and pi ano interpretation. The concert will focus on com posers utilizing the 12 tone meth od, which departs radically from the traditional major minor sys tem of composition by using the 12 chromatic tones of an octave in any chosen order. Concerts March 5 and 6 will stress contemporary German : piano literature and harpsichord 1 music respectively. Both are i slated for 8 p.m. in the School | of Music auditorium. The John Sturges ("The Great Es cape," “The Satan Bug”) produc tion stars Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, Jim Hutton, Pamela Tif fin, Donald Pleasance and Brian Keith. To be featured along with this will be “The Glory Guys" with Tom Tryon (“The Cardinal”) and Harve Presnell (“The Unsinkable Molly Brown"). Fair warning: that'll be almost five hours of westerns. The SU movie playing at 2:30 and 8:30 p.m. Sunday will be "The Chalk Garden,” a story in which a woman tries to gain possession of her resisting granddaughter from her divorced daughter while Chorale to Present First Open Rehearsal The public will have the op portunity for the first time to view a choral rehearsal at the University at 8 p.m. Sunday in the School of Music auditorium. Dello Joio's "The Psalm of Da vid” will be presented by the University Chorale during the open rehearsal which will allow those attending to observe how works are rehearsed for the final performance which will be May 14. H. Royce Saltzman. associate professor of music, will conduct the singers. Artists' Oil Show Displayed in SU The American Society of Con temporary Artists Traveling Oil Show will be on display at the University through Saturday. The works of 22 society members will be on exhibit in the Student Un ion Art Gallery. The exhibit is part of the Uni versity’s 1966 Festival of Arts. The American Society of Con temporary Artists was establish ed in 1917 as the Brooklyn Soci ety of Artists. And the Fox is making no such j plans to change at all Composer to Talk On Today's Music George Rochberg, a composer | who wrestles with the problems j of contemporary music, will dls ‘ cuss "Music of Today: Aural Fact; or Fiction” in a Festival of Arts lecture at 8 p.m. today in the | School of Music auditorium. Rochberg, who has written for numerous American ensembles, i including the Philadelphia Or- j chestra, is chairman of the De partment of Music at the L’nivcr- i sity of Pennsylvania. A number of critical and the oretical articles by Rochberg have appeared in leading music magazines and journals in t h e United States and Europe during the 1930's and 1960’s. According to Rochberg, his writings on music have always been attempts to define either a problem or a position, motivated j by a need to come to grips with j his creative situation, and relat j ed to what he is composing at the j time.
