In Mexico, Costa Rica Institute Plans Foreign Seminars Three summer research training seminars in Mexico and Costa Rica for Oregon graduate stu dents have been announced by John F. Gange, director of the University's Institute of Interna tional Studies and Overseas Ad ministration. The 1964 seminars are a con tinuation of the interdisciplinary seminars begun under the aus pices of the Institute in the summer of 1962. The seminars receive financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Sessions 12 Weeks All three seminars will run for about 12 weeks. Students will register for graduate credit un der the University’s 11-week sum mer session program. Fellowships are being offered for qualified students needing financial support for the summer. Applicants must be competent in Spanish and have previous study for Latin America, or intend to include such study in their fu ture academic program. Fellowships Offered Fellowship awards will be made only to well qualified stu dents who will be continuing graduate studies at the Univer sity or Oregon State University in the 1964-65 academic year. r One of the seminars will be in the states of Jalisco and Co lima in Mexico under the direc tion of Samuel N. Dicken, pro fessor of geography. This study of recent physical, social, and cultural changes in the area will be carried out by making a se rics of small area studios in dif | ferent environments. Ttaxcala Study Set A second seminar will conduct a study of Mexican culture in the valley of Tlaxcala under the di rection of Dwight T. Wallace, as sistant professor of anthropology African Arts Topic of Talk ‘ African Arts and Crafts" will be the subject of a Browsing Room lecture Wednesday by Rob ert Ferens, associate professor of architecture. At the talk Ferens will show color slides and play tape re cordings assembled during his stay in Africa beginning in 1961 when he served as consulting en gineer on the Volta Dam project for the Ghana government. Following the talk a reception will be held for Ferens in the Museum of Art where his collec tion, "Arts and Crafts of West Africa.” is on exhibition through Feb 9. Ferens obtained many of the j items in his collection in West Africa, which, Ferens said, is the most important area for arts in all of Africa. Games Tourney To Select Teams An all-campus games tourna ment will be held Jan. 20-26 in the Student Union to select teams to attend the Association of Col lege Unions' Regional Tourna ment at Oregon State University Students interested in partici pating in the tournament must sign up by 5 p.m. Friday at the SU recreation desk for billiards and table tennis and at the SU program office for bridge and chess. The following will win the ti tle of University champion in their game and the right to at tend the regional tournament at OSU against representatives from all Western states and the op portunity to play in the national tournament: One man and one woman in pocket billiards, one man in three-cushion billiards, and two (man or woman) in table tennis, chess, and bridge. This summer’s research in Tlaxcala will consist of a survey project in archaeology, human ecology, social organization, anil deviant behavior. Long-range plans in the area are for a study of culture in depth and through time, tracing the roots of the in digenous cultural heritage, and exploring the combination of in digenous and Spanish elements which has resulted in the unique, thoroughly Mexican blend of the present. Plant Kesearch Planned The third seminar is a study of the process of plant domesti cation in Costa Rica under the direction of Carl Johannesscn, as si.-tent professor of geography The research will focus on the discovery of factors that modify the selection of reproductive ma terial when cultivated varieties are planted. The economic and social consequences of plant do mestication will also be studied. Students interested in these summer projects should consult the faculty members in charge of the summer seminar most appro priate to their graduate program.
