Photo: Ed Ehrlich Minus Renfro, Kanehe Ducks Gird for SJS 11 By MICKEY SCOTT Emerald Sports Writer An injury-ridden University of Oregon football team will take the field against the San Jose State Spartans, Saturday, in quest of its fifth win of the season. The Ducks will go into the game minus the services of 250 lb. tackle, Milt Kanehe, speedy Mel Renfro, and number-one play maker, Bob Berry. Kanehe, who came out of the Washington game with a fractured right leg, will be lost to the Ducks for the rest of the season. Renfro, sidelined with a cracked rib, definitely will not see action. Berry, who still ranks third among the nation’s leaders in total offense, might be called upon if the going gets tough against the Spartans. Moving into the quarterback spot for the Ducks will be sopho more Jack Sovereign, who, in ad dition to his play-calling duties | this season, sports a nifty 42.3 yard punting average. Sovereign will be backed by another sopho more, Tom Finucane. who was to sit out this season until Berry de veloped a stiff knee Lu Bain will also be ready to move in from his fullback post if th| passes of Sov ereign and Finucane go astray. Berry Sparts’ Quarterback The Spartans will bring to Eu gene a pro-type passing attack that can score from any spot on the field. .They’ll also have a few additional wrinkles in their of fense. The Spartans lost to the Ducks by a slim 14-0 margin last i year. Ready to pitch footballs for the Frosh Hoping to Keep String Alive vs. Pups By PHIL SEMAS Emerald Sports Writer Ed Johns has a chance to be the hero of the Oregon coaching staff for the second week in a row. Last week Johns’ freshman football team became the first Oregon athletic team to beat Oregon State this season. This weekend the Ducklings can put another feather in Johns’ cap by doing what the varsity couldn’t do—beat the University of Wash ington. The Pups come to town Fri day wdth'a record that’s not very impressive and a reputation for toughness and excellence in foot ball’s two basic skills — block ing and tackling. Washington freshman teams don’t always compile good win loss records, but they have a perennial reputation among op posing freshman coaches as a ^ tough crew to face. Pups Lost To Idaho So Johns isn’t taking them lightly, despite the fact that! they lost to Idaho, 32-18, last week. But the Ducklings have no reason to fear Washington. They have some pretty powerful ere dentials of their own. First, there’s that 2-0 record that includes victories over Ore gon State and the Pups’ sister school, Washington State. They’ve also a backfield that’s been surprisingly effective. Tom Jernstedt, the much-touted quar terback from Yamhill-Carlton, is the man who heads that speedy group. He’s completed 16 of 30 passes for prodigious total of 232 yards. His favorite targets have been end Steve Bunker and Ray Johnson, one of the starting half backs. Temple Paces Runners Halfback Tim Temple has been pacing the ground attack with 74 yards in 11 carries, and sec ond-string halfback Bill O’Toole is close behind with 69 yards in eight attempts. The Duckling line is only aver- j age in size, but have become not ed for their tenacious effort, par ticularly the defensive effort that; held Oregon State’s highly re-' garded offense to one touchdown. San Jose State squad will he Ken Berry, a sophomore who is the younger brother of the Duck's Bob. Ken moved into the starting position two weeks ago against the Cal Bears. He connected on 12 of 19 passes in the second half to move the Spartan’s highly tout ed Rand Carter out of the nuin her one position. Berry followed this with a 9 for 11 performance against the Idaho Vandals last week. Berry will be looking for two of his favorite targets, speedy back Walt Roberts and Cass Jack son, to hook-up with his long aerials. Only Half a Foot For place-kicking duty the Spartans will call on one of the most unusual football players in the nation. He is 220 1b. Rich Tately, who doesn't let the loss of half his kicking foot hamper him. Tately is accurate from anywhere inside the opponent’s 45-yard line, and will probably see action when ever the Spartans are stymied in Oregon territory. The Ducks will be looking for their eighth straight victory against the Spartans, in a series that dates back to 1953. Although the Ducks hold a decisive series advantage over the Spartans, the San Jose State eleven has continu ally plagued Duck defenders with their wide-open brand of football.
