Expects Cramer To Go Right by Him Sternberg Set for 16 Feet By RAY MAST Emerald Sports Editor A man who has vaulted 16-5, and only 13 days ago held the world's outdoor pole-vault record, expects his teammate, who.has done no more than 15-6, to soon become the outstanding pole vaulter in the U.S. In a recent telephone conver sation, Brian Sternberg. 19-year old sophomore pole vault sensa tion from the University of Wash ington, said. ”John Cramer has gone 15-6 unofficially this year, but I expect him to go right by me in a short time. Cramer has the classical form, and he has no broad jumping problem that ham pers most vaulters who use the fiberglass pole.” Sternberg has been vaulting ! with a fiberglass pole since his senior year at Shoreline High j School in Seattle, but just this year started using the new model ' that has taken him to the world record in such a short time. Few adjustment problems Sternberg said, “I haven't had much of a problem adjusting to the fiberglass pole. It took me only a short time to get the right action. At first I had a control problem like everyone seems to have, though. "The primary thing,” said Sternberg, "is to keep from broad jumping. But, unlike the alumi num pole. I have to take a high er grip on the pole." That's what the movies showed anyway.” Sternberg doesn't think that the fiberglass pole has cheapened the record. On the contrary. Sternberg said, “It’s unfortunate that Don Bragg’s record had to go down the drain like it did. I’m sure I couldn’t have done what he did with an aluminum pole. He talked to me recently and advised me about a lower grip." Meets Pennel at Compton John Pennel. the world’s out door record holder from North east Louisiana State, recently wrote a letter to Sternberg tell ing him that the two would meet in the Compton Relays on June 1. Sternberg said that he has never met Pennel, but is looking for ward to June 1. Indoors or outdoors—it makes no difference to Sternberg. "When I’m indoors, I like that best,” he said; “when I’m outdoors I like that best. Of course there’s the weather problem outdoors, though.” Sternberg said that he expect ed trouble in the NCAA finals from all pole vaulters that have vaulted 16 feet this year Among those in the college ranks he singled out C. K. Yang of UCLA, Mel Hein and Mike Flanagan of USC, Pennel, and Orlando Cruz. He also mentioned, as all who watched the Oregon USC meet know, that Hein had a problem of angling to the right when he vaults. Silent on record chances For those who hope to see Sternberg set a record in Satur day’s meet at Hayward Field, Sternberg was more or less non commental. "There's a lot of fac tors to take into account,” he said. “The weather and how I feel are the two most important I just hope the weather is real good We have that problem in the Northwest, you know.” We know. Just hope that the weather gives this young man a chance to show his talents.
