(Continued on page 8) Expert Reveals How To Escape Marriage Trap By PHIL COGSWELL Editor's Note: Mr. Cogswell preferred to remain anonymous tnd permitted use of his name only after extensive persuasion. His hesitation reportedly stems from the fact that he fears he may at some time reverse his position on the following issue, and at such time he does not want his column to be used against him. This column is not really being written in order to inform every body about how they can escape being caught. It is being written because it is necessary to fill up this space with something. Ac tually, they really didn't want me to write the column but I was a last resort. THAT’S ONE way to escape being caught—always tell the truth about yourself. Being a last resort, then, sort of comes natur ally, at least for me. To tell the truth some more, I don’t really expect very many people to read this article. It is being written for people who. like myself, do not like bridal edi tions, Bride magazines, or any thing else pertaining to weddings. In fact there are those of us whose dislike is something akhi to terror. For this reason, I will not read this Bridal edition, even though my column is in it, and J am not a bit sorry. BUT FOR the occasional per son, generally male I suppose, who is desperately leafing through this publication hoping against hope to find somewhere one slight indication that getting married immediately is not the only thing (or even the most im portant) in the world, I offer my encouragement and will offer whatever advice I can to help him maintain his freedom. Lest anybody expect too much, however, I will issue the warning that not getting caught is more a matter of instinct (some say a lack of it) than anything else. I look back and see that the real triumphs were almost accidental, they were certainly not planned. I REMEMBER, for instance, the time I went to sleep during the most exciting moments of a movie called “A Night to Remem ber,” thus missing a wonderful chance to console a very senti mental girl. This explains, in part, why I don’t have nights to remember myself. Other subconscious devices which have also stood me in good stead, might also be mentioned but I have forgotten them. MORE SERIOUS, however, if when the girl, despite everything you have done, seems to think you would be worth catching This, believe it or not, has nevei happened to me, at least not thal I know of. (Note: this is an ex ample of another technique: talk as if no girl was ever interested in you and imply that there is something wrong with any girl that is.) But if a girl is interested there are several things one can do. Running is probably the most successful way, if possible. The Foreign Legion was full, not of men trying to get away from it all, but of men trying to get away from a woman. IF YOU can’t run, chase. Chase someone else, I mean. You then have something which is a com bination of an eternal triangle and ring-around-the-rosy. Inci dentally, be wary of any mention of rings; it’s a bad sign. Chasing has obvious disadvan tages, however. One is that the person you are chasing might de ! cide to try to catch you and then you must suddenly reverse field Watch out for the one behind you, too. There is a chance you might be able to slip away in the confusion. VERY DANGEROUS but worth trying in desperate circumstances is another ploy. This is proposal of marriage, once again to some one else rather than the person trying to catch you. When you are refused, you can retire into dignified and rather dramatic se elusion. The danger is obvious Your proposal might be accepted and then you arc caught. That, as the poet said, is the way it goes sometimes. A couple of final warnings might be in order First, don’t get overly confident. The pursuer is not to be underrated and will very often win. Second, accord ing to informed sources, getting caught isn't always so bad. In fact, maybe bridal editions have their place after all. THE SHORT-SLEEVED sports shirt is staple for spring and summer wear. Plaid, again, is the most popular fabric design and the fabrics are all light weight cottons. His major expense, of course, is for the bride’s engagement rinc | (if there is one) and her wedding ring. The groom is also expected to pay for the marriage license and his own medical examination He may or may not pay for his bachelor dinner; this is optional. He does buy a gift for the bride, the bride’s bouquet, and her going away corsage. He buys bouton niere for the men in the wedding party and, if the wedding is for mal. their gloves, ascots, and ties The groom is also expected to buy male members of the wedding small gifts and to take care of their accommodations if needed. The groom also purchases flow ers for both mothers.
