The Ducks shocked everyone in the cage world last weekend when they upset the strong California Golden Bears 60-55. The Ducks and the Vandals clashed several weeks ago in Eu gene's Mac Court, and the Van dals went home with two wins to their credit. In the opening en counter, the Webfoots fought the dangerous Vandals to a deadlock in regulation time, but let several golden opportunities slip by in the overtime period and came out on the short end of 62-61 score. The following night the Web foot? went flatter than a pancake as the Vandals ran away from the Ducks in route to an easy 81-58 win. If the Webfoot’s didn’t learn anything else in the Idaho series they certainly learned that Gus Johnson, Idaho 6’6” center, is one of the best ever to perform in the Northwest. Johnson put on quite a show for Oregon fans. He scored twenty points in the first game before fouling out, and the next night rippled the net for-sixteen count ers. In addition to his point pro duction. Johnson was outstanding on defense, and his ball handling was nlWre like a guard than a 6'6” giant. Last Saturday night Johnson turned in a brilliant performance against Idaho State. He scored 37 points, a new school record, picked off 25 rebounds, got 12 as sists, and blocked 15 shots. Quite an evening’s work for a single man. The Vandals presently boast the best record in the Northwest with a 13-3 mark. Until last week end the Idaho cage crew was 12 and 2 with Johnson in the lineup, but Washington State turned the trick against the Vandals Friday night even though Johnson turned in a fine performance. The Webfoots sent some Cali fornia sunshine north Friday night in the form of a 60-55 upset win over the Cal Golden Bears The Ducks were overpowered Saturday night by the potent Cal team, but the series marked the return to form of Webfoot for ward Jerry Anderson. Anderson, an off and on per former so far this season, found the range against Cal and scored 25 points in the two night Berke ley stand. The return of Ander son to form could be the badly needed support for the scoring at tack of Glenn Moore and Steve Jones. Belko has been running the Duck cagers through a rugged practice schedule this week. • EMERALD SPORTS Oregon To Meet PSC Wrestlers By RAY MAST Emerald Sport* Writer The University of Oregon wrest ling squad travels to Portland to meet strong Portland State Col lege at 8 o’clock tonight. PSC has a 5-2 record going into the match and are the only team to defeat Oregon State. They have lost to Brigham Young, 15^9, and Washington. 16-10.
