Far West Champs 13:3! Tarr Sets High Hurdle Record; Webfoots Win Ninth Year in Row By DAVE STOREY Assistant Sports Editor Jerry Tarr set a new American soil record in the high hurdles of 12.3 as Oregon easily won the Far West Championships at Hay ward Field Saturday. It was the ninth straight win for the UO in the meet. Tarr was only one tenth of a second off the world mark of 13.2 held by Martin Lauer of Ger many' in Switzerland in 1959 and Lee Calhoun of the United States also in Switzerland in 1960. He was given a standing ovation by the crowd of 6.000 when the time was announced. The fine effort turned in by Tarr and the Ducks climaxed a great weekend of track. Friday night Dyrol Burleson ran the mile in 3:51.9 only to lose out to New Zealand’s Peter Snell who finished in 3:56.1. The “Miracle .Mile" was staged in conjunction with the Coliseum Relays which produced two ! world marks. Dallas Long set a new world standard in the shot put with a put of 65-10'2 and A1 Oerter became the first man to throw the discus over , 200 feet with a heave of 200 The big senior said that he was surprised at the record time but credited it to a fine start, and said that the special shoes made by Coach Bill Bowerman worked “pretty well." NEXT W EEKEND could be the big test for Tarr at Modesto if Hayes Jones enters. Jones has beaten him every time the two have met and Jerry is anxious to race him again. Concerning his plans for the summer Tarr said, "I hope to make the United States team that will face Russia at Stanford in July." What about football next fall? He said. ‘:I’m undecided now'; it all depends on the offers; if they aren't desirable enough I will aim at the ’64 Olympics.” THE “TIGER” also ran the 440 intermediate hurdles for the first time and won easily in 52.0, in addition to running a blazing third leg of the 440 relay’ which the Ducks won in 40.7. Coach Bill Bowerman’s -Web foots won 13 of the 18 events am amassed 981 - points, followed by Oregon with 65' *>, Washington State 39'-. Idaho 33 >•.. and Wash ington 32. The poor opposition put forth by the Big Five Huskies shoidd be reason enough in itself why six of the Duck’s top stars skipped the dual meet in Seattle last weekend to go after world records in Fresno. HARRY JEROME also won two events as he won the 100 in 9.5 bucking a 5 mile headwind and the 200 in 18.5. The 200 was supposed to a 220 and was an nounced as such. At the end of the race the new scoreboard flashed 18.5 which would have been a new world mark in 220 easily. The crowd stared in amazement then laughter, think ing the new clock to be way off. It was later learned that there had been a mixup and that the course had been shortened 20 yards by mistake, hence the new timer was only two-tenths of a second wrong. Another fine performance was turned in by Mel Renfro in the broad jump as he beat Jerry Close for the first time this year with an impressive leap of 24-3'L. which qualified him for the NCAA meet June 15 and 16 here at Hayward Field. LITTLE MIKE Lehner also met the NCAA standard in the stee ple chase with a time of 9:15.7, which is a new meet and field record. Terry Llewellyn, the 5-7 sopho more, won the high jump with his best effort ever, 6-9, which isj a meet record breaking the old one set by Les Steers of the UO in 1941. Llewellyn, in winning, avenged an earlier defeat by, Hank Wybomey in the Duck-! Cougar dual meet earlier this J season. Big Hank went out at 6-9. KEITH FORMAN was another record breaker, winning the three mile in 13:58.5 which is well un der the NCAA requirement. Sig Ohlemann won the half mile as usual but was pressed hard for the lead by Ted Abram until a mishap coming off the final turn. Don Bertoia of WSU was battling Abram for second when he acci dentally spiked the UO sopho more causing him to fall hard on the track and lose his second place. Bertoia finished amid a chorus of boos, but officials ruled there was no infraction. Erik the Red had no choice-but Vitalis with V-7 will keep your hair neat all day without grease. Naturally. Vitalis -V Still another meet record was set by Dave Steen in the shot put, as he threw the 16 pounder 57-10. Other Webfoot winners were Ar chie San Romani in the mile and Jerry Stubblefield in the discus The only bright spot for the otherwise dismal Huskies was the performance of John Cramer in the pole vault. He vaulted 15-3% with a steel pole after a heavy downpour which left only a few shivering spectators looking on. Broad jump 1, Mel Renfro, O. 24-32. Jerry Close. O, 23-9V 3.
