Underdog Tracksters Head for Palo Alto By l)t('K IJCl'TZINOKH KmcrBld Track Analyst The Duck* leave today for Palo Alto for their biggest track teat Mince 1(99 when they met South ern Cul and Stanford in a wlml lar affair. Coach Bill Bowerman will have 20 athleten and man ager Bruce Bunnell aboard when tins plane takes off at 1 o’clock thla afternoon for Han Francisco. THK PKOBIJCM In predicting an event by event score Ih that each week a few men come up with their beat performanceH ever, and it 1m almoxt impossible to »ay which men will do thiw. If Oregon gets such performances out of broad Jumper Jerry Clowe, hurdler Jerry Tarr, discus throw er Jerry Stubblefield and javelin thrower* Paul Bcrnick and John Burns, there’B no telling what ttie score will be. Of course, USC may come up with some beat ever marks too. Anyway, here ’ll*: (Time* listed ure beat 1901 per* formance*. "W" indicates wind aided.) .MICE — Dyrol Burleson (Oi 4:01 2; Keith Forman lOi 4:05.8; George Far non (O) 4:07.9; John Northway < S) 4:15.2. One of SC's weakest event* and Oregon’* strongest. The Duck* won’t have much trouble finlah ing one-two-three here. 410—Hex Cawley (SO) 46.2; Kevin Hogan (SC) 47.3; Bobby Staten (SO 47.3; Jim Ihickett (Ot 4 7.8. One of the few running event* where Trojan* are truly strong. On the basis of Puckett’s Im provement last week, he may sneak up a place higher. 100—Harry Jerome (O) 9.4; Itoacoe Cook (O) 9.5w; Bruce Alunn (SC) 9.6; lam Breschini (S) 9.7. Cook always runs well In Cali fornia hut Jerome la too much of a clutch performer to lose in this meet. 1*0 VI). II.If. Jerry Tarr (O) 14.1; Bob Pierce (SC) 13.9; Brian Polkinghorne (SC) 14.1; Gaecht er (O) 14.5. Strictly a hunch. Tarr has im proved progressively over the past few weeks while Pierce goes j fast, slow, fast, etc. This week {should be his "off” race, accord ing to the season record. 800 Dyrol Burleson (Oil :50.0; 'Sig Ohlemann (O) 1.51.1; Rich Kller (Si 1:51.1; Warren Karlow i (SCi 1:51.6. Burleson and Ohlemann should have little trouble beating the : rest of the field. Their times aren't indicative of their ability > as they haven't been pushed yet this season. 220—Harry Jerome (O) 20.9; ! Bruce Munn (SC) 21.0; Roscoe Cook (O) no time; Rusty Weeks ! (SC) 216. Should be an interesting duel for first and second and another /cr third and fourth. Anything can happen. SHOT PUT—Dallas Long (9C > 1-3’j; Dave Steen (Oi 55-10 Jim Wade (SC) 53-2'*; Bob At kinson (8) 51-1. Competitors are so unevenly matched, there's little room for change here. DISCUS—Jim Wade (SCi 175 5; Jerry Stubblefield (O/ 167-7: Dave Weill (S) 170-5; Don Bell (Si 166-5; Dave Steen (O) 154 11. This could be the key event of the meet. Wade has thrown over Ilk) but hasn't approached that this season. Stubblefield is due and ready for a 170 plus throw. HIGH JUMP Bob Avant <SCi l-lO'ii Norm Grundy (SC) 6 6'*; (tie) Steve Goughltn (SC) 6-4; and Murray Newton (Oi 6-2. Coughlin inconsistent so New ton may earn a point for Oregon in its weakest event. J A VIOLIN—Bob Sbordone (SC) 230-4; Art Batchelder (S> 229 10; F'aul Bernick (O) 223-10; Dick Tomlinson (SCi 218-5. Like the discus, this event is wide open. Sbordone has not thrown up to his capabilities while Bernick is improving rap idly. POLE VAULT—Jim Brewer (SC) 15-2'/2; (tie) Mel Hein (C) 14-7, Phil Paquin (O) 14-9, Dari McAllister (O) 14-4 and Phil White (S) 14-4%. Hein has not been a consistent performer. Two places for Oregon depend of course, on whether Paquin makes the trip and how healthy he is if he competes. The only sure place is Brewer in first. BROAD JUMP —Jerry Close (O) 24-7%; Dan Moore (S) 25-1: Luther Hayes (SC) 24-7; Bill Jackson (SC) 23-9. Stanford’s lone potential win ner is Moore, from Salem, Ore. Close had two scratch jumps over 25 feet last weekend and will probably go 25 or so this week. Moore will have to be at his best to beat him. 220 YD. L.H.—Rex Cawley (SC) 22.5; Bob Pierce (SC) 23.3; Jerry Tarr (O) 24.0; Brian Polk inghome (SC) 23.9. Tarr could easily finish second and Mike Gaechter fourth de spite times, for USC has run this race on straightaway, Oregon on a curve. Only Cawley is reason ably sure of predicted place here. TWO MILE Vic Reeve (O) 9:10.1; Keith Forman (O) 9:15.8; George Larson (O) 9:20.0; Fer nando Leon (SC) 9:31.0. Forman and Larson will be tired from mile. If all nine points are needed at this stage of the meet, Burleson could be presesd into service for a third race, and would have little trouble finish ing among the top three. MILE RELAY—USC (Bobby Staten, Dean Balzarett, Kevin Hogan, Rex Cawley) 3:07.9; Ore gon; Stanford. SC set NCAA record last week with above team. SCORE—USC, 75, Oregon 72 »/„ Stanford 15 /t USC 66 5/6, Oregon 64 1 /6 Majors... (Continued from page 4) to six hits as he picked up his first win of 1961.
