The hard-charging full back, only a Junior, pushed his way into the starting lineup late in the 1958 campaign and is expected to shine this season. Spring football practice got underway Monday with more than 00 grldders turning out for the 20-<lay drills. Coach Lcn Casanova, who will be entering his ninth year as Webfoot grid mentor, will be seeking to find replacements for the graduating linemen from last season's defense-minded squad. The Webfoot* lost guard Bob Grottkau, tackles Jim Linden and Darrell Aschtoacher, guard Joe Schaffeld and ends I’ete Welch and Hon Stover from the starting line of the 1958 sea son. Reserve linemen Dave Fish, Bob Heard and Will Reeve also will not be on hand for the up coming fall campaign. Loading the list of returning lettermen are All-Coast center Bol) Peterson and All-Coast half back Willie West. Returning for another cam paign in the backfield are Dave Grosz at quarterback, West, Dave Powell at fullback, Dave Grayson and Don Laudenslager at halfbacks, Harry Needham ut fullback and Sandy Fraser at quarterback. The addition of JC transfers and members of the unbeaten fresh man squad turned out for spring drills yesterday and are expected to bolster Duck grid fortunes for the 1959 campaign. ATO's nip Phi Delts in 'mural pitching duel mix teams won intramural baseball games Monday as the season reached the halfway mark. Monday’s winners were Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Psi, Canard Club, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Shel don and Young Halls. ATO's triumph Jerry Laing of the Phi Delta and Bud Kuykendall of ATO stole the action as they hurled score less ball for six innings only to have the ATO's break through in the seventh for a single tally to win the thriller. Laing struck out ten ATO bat ters and Kuykendall sent eight Phi Delts down by the strike out route in the thrilling clash. The winning ATO run was scored by Roger Nelson in the last of the seventh. Young wins Jim Peterson, Stafford hurler, struck out nine Young batters but lost a 4-1 decision to his Earl Hall neighbors. The winners scored two runs in the second on four walks by Peterson and added two more in the third to ice the game. Stafford s lone run was scored on Phil Klaus' homer in the fourth. Chi Psi rolls Chi Psi downed Sigma Nu 15-13 in a four inning shigfest Monday on the Library Field. The winners tallied four runs in the first to open the scoring, and followed up with six, four and one runs respectively in the second, third and fourth innings. Warren Spady paced Chi Psi with a triple and a homer. Canard romps Canard Club Jelled for a big ! eight run second inning to down 1 Campbell Club Monday 9-4. The winners were led by Shrock and Williams who clubbed homers; Moore was the winning Canard Club hurier. Sig Eps winners Sigma Phi Epsilon tallied five runs in the second and three in the third to down Beta Theta Pi 12-3. Dave Dechaine hurled a four hitter as he limited the Beta's to two runs in the first and one in the third inning. The Sig Eps collected four hits in their victory. Sheldon victorious Sheldon Hall downed McClure Hall 10-3 Monday in a game that started as a pitching duel for the first two innings and broke wide open in the third. McClure opened the scoring with three runs in the top half of the third but the Stafford bats men began hitting and by the time the last of the third was over ten runs had crossed the plate for Stafford.
