Saga of the '©' THERE WASN’T MlTCH to see on the “O" construction until the one and one-half ton steel letter >vns set in place. The sections weighing from 750 to 8'0 lbs. were set in position by members of Alpha Phi Omega on Friday before Junior Week. AN SOON AS the steel letter Him in plitee, the welding of the four section* hum begun- Ken Opngcr from Eugene Truck and Ma chinery Co. donated his time to do the welding. REPRESENTING the University in the presentation of the “O” were (I to r): Jim Lynch, ASUO president, Dean DoShaoe, and President O. Meredith Wilson. The “O” was dedicated by Garth McGuire and Jim Boyd, Alpha Phi Omega oilicers. AF1EK CAKKYINti the sections of the '*<>" down the hill, the task of lining; up the edge of the letter with the surveyor's strings proved to lx* um of the hardest tasks confronted by the work crew. The letter wax finally lined up and temporarily bolted together lietore the final wilding of the four connecting joints and remaining legs. THE CEMENT, half of which was donated by Eugene Sand and Gravel Co., arrived on Saturday. The onc-fourth-inch steel legs of the letter were resting on concrete previously poured in the bottoms of the pier forms. This concrete, like the rest, had to be carried down the hill in buckets by A PO members. Three yards of concrete were used in all. AT LAST SATURDAY’S dedication, President O. '■■ SINCE THERE COULD be no freshmen painting the “O” at the dedication, Jim Boyd, vice-president of Alpha Phi Omega and member of the freshman class, “volunteered” to paint the “O.” (Photo story by John Russell) this; wUION of the “O” on Saturday was attended hy Hud Titus and .Jim Lyneh, holding the dedication plaque, Dean DuShane, President O. M. Wilson, members of contributing houses, and the service fraternity. The “O” was designed by C. J >lin Maurer, who worked with the members of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity who built the “O.”
