IM Title Fight Opens Today Eight Squads Vie For Championship The first round of the 1958 Class A intramural basketball championships get underway this afternoon with three games on tap. Another game—a B playoff clash between Alpha Hall and Morton Hall—is also on tap. Theta Chi, winners of the League Two title, will meet Sigma Nu in the opener at 3:50 on Court 40. The Theta Chi Five with a 4-1 record had to win a playoff game with Phi Kappa Psi to gain a playoff berth, while Sigma Nu rolled j Emerald Board Picks Phi Dells For IM Crown Phi Delta Theta enters the 1958 intramural Class A basketball tournament today as tight favo rites to cart off the crown. The Emerald board of seven IM wri ters picked the Phi Delts to win the title in a close vote over sec ond choice Alpha Hall and third pick Theta Chi. The Emerald board gave four first place votes to Alpha, two to Theta Chi and only one to the Phi Delts, but five second place votes were enough to give the Phi Delts a seven point bulge over Alpha and a nine point lead over Theta Chi. Points were given on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis with a first place vote worth eight points and an eight place vote worth one point. Following the top three were Sigma Nu, Legal Eagles, Smith Hall, Lambda Chi Alpha and Amazon Village in that order. Intramural writers on the Emerald board were Larry Kurtz, Ranny Green, A1 Hynd ing, John Weber, Jim Spangler, Dick Puusti and A1 Winter. The poll with first place votes in parenthesis: Club Pts. 1. Both j games will start at 4:45. The Phi Delts, Alphas and i Eagles went through their sea sons undefeated. Smith gained the tourney with a Wednesday playoff victory over Sweetzer Hail. A fourth first round Class A match is slated for Monday when Lambda Chi Alpha meets Ama zon Village. The Class B tour ney will open next Tuesday with j the final clashes in both divi sions scheduled for a week from j today. In Thursday’s only scheduled | intramural action. Alpha's B squad rolled over Sheldon to get j that crack at Morton today for the League Seven title. Behind by 21 points, Shel don could not find time enough to conquer their opponents.
