Oregon Readies for El Troy With Rough Contact Session ... Pass Defense, Rushing Game Show up well Working again in “closed” practice Jiin Aiken sent his charges through the first con tact workout of the week,1 stressing especially passing and pass-defense, as Saturday’s tiff with Southern Cal ap proaches. The major part of the session was taken up with the number one offensive squad running plays against the top defensive unit. Running Attack Clicks The attack was moving well on the ground, with Tommy Hines, Bob Oas and Keith DeCourcey do ing some nice running. However, though they were un able to stop the ground attack con sistently, the defensive unit was effective in stopping the aerial game. Van Brocklin’s receivers were having a rough time break ing into the clear, as the defensive unit bottled them up very effi ciently. Without any pass receivers, Van was caught several times behind the line by the opposing line. Wilkins Looks liooil When he did throw, however, he laid the ball light down the line.. His favorite target was Dick Wil kins, who palled in several tosses. Neither George Bell nor Johnny McKay, regular halfbacks, took part in the scrimmage, though Bell was wearing pads. They ran around the field, loosening up dur ing most of the session. Aiken was hoping that they will both be a vailable for duty Saturday against use. “We expect the Trojans to be plenty tough, and I hope we’ll be at full strength for the game,” he said. Tradition Favors Lettermen -Stocked Eleven From Troy This Saturday, the Webfoots meet a team ttiey haven’t beaten since 1941, a team that has lost only twice to them in the history of the rivalry. The University of Southern Cali fornia, to name the culprits, has won 11 out of the 14 games be tween the two schools, and has only been held to a tie once. Coached by Jeff Cravath, they have a veteran team with 19 let termen as a nucleus. And, as his ardent advocates point out, Cra vnth has never lost a game to Ore gon since becoming head coach. Cravath 88, Ducks 0 In 1942, in his first year at Troy, Oravath's boys battered the Web foots 40-0. In their only other meeting since then, the Trojans swamped the invaders from the North, 43-0. Cravath feels that his team this year is underrated. "After all, we are the defending champions, and we have a lot of men back from that team. We’ll be tough this year,” he said before the season be gan, and he hasn't publicly changed his mind since then. The Trojans lost 19 lettermen from the 1948 Rose Bowl team, but they have 19 left to build upon. Also reutrning are three letter CAGEY CATCHER—That’s Dick Wilkins, who glittered yesterday as one of the most dependable receptacles for Norm Van Brocklin’s aerial slants. And Dick’s “cagey” in more ways than one, for he is <liiite some shakes as a basketball player. Bowerman's Yearlings Dash Through Workouts Oregon's football Ducklings resumed full-scale practice op erations yesterday afternoon after last weekend's successful opener against the Washington freshmen. Coach Mill Bowerman sent his first team up against an ag gregation composed of mostly third and fourth stringers, while the second sauad scrim-1 -- >vunc uu; owuiiu maged another scrub outfit. Assistant coaches Bill Abbey and Steve Mezzera took charge of the second team. Regulars Pressed Although the regulars found the offensive going rough at times, Quarterback Calderwood’s pitch outs to halves Holeman and Ed wards were consistent ground gainers, while Missfeldt through the line was usually good for about five yards. When the first team went on de fense Tackle Dick Hudson, Guard Don McCauley, and End Bob Wil cox stood out in the line. Tackle John McAloon played a rugged brand of defense for the scrub outfit along with Guard Mal com Marsh. Timms Goes Well At the other end of the field where the second squad was scrimmaging, halfbacks Herb Timms and Hay Karnofski spark led offensively. Timms especially got off several long runs that would have been sure touchdowns under game con ditions. A small, speedy left half back, Timms will probably give first string backs a run for their money in the future. During pre-scrimmage drills, Bowerman put plenty of emphasis on pass defense, a weakness in the Washington game. nit 11 irora years previous to i, including: Art Battles, a regular in 19-16 who has again been awarded the first string right half berth. Raft of Transfers Also around are nine members of last year’s squad who failed to letter .and 10 are outstanding stars from the SC freshman team. Numerous transfers have also re ported to Cravath and the six oth er Trojan grid coaches, all but one working with the varsity. The men of Troy will run out of a regular "T,” and have speed and passing to run the system.
