Oregon Cagers Triumph, 4240 John Warren has come up with an idea that should turn out to be slightly terrific. He proposes to have a free throwing contest at halftime during the Oregon home games. Anyone, young or old, is eligible to enter. The only require ment is that you are able to hit the basket, or at least the back board, once in a while. Originally Warren’s plan was to have viuy mgu saiooi ooys competing, and then decided to give some peo ple who sit in the stands and yell their heads off when one of the players misses a gift toss under pressure. Now’s your chance to find out how good, or how some thing, you are. Anyway if you have a hidden ambition about your bas ketball ability, there is your chance to make a showing. Also on the fire is a playoff be tween Lane county (Oregon) and -Senton county (Oregon State) for a county or school championship. Anyway John, you’ve hit on an idea that we hope will really de velop. It would provide some fine, much-needed, half-time entertain ment and enthusiasm. Oliver Coaches Dream Team Lt. Com. Tex Oliver, former Ore gon head football coach who has been loaned to the navy for the duration, is in the type of spot that coaches sit and dream about. This Sunday in Honolulu they are having another Army-Navy •Jgotball game, and Oliver is coach ing the Navy team. All he has to work w'ith are All-Americans about three deep in every position. For awhile he was worried about tal ent, so he sent out an S.O.S. for some of the former stars who are in the navy. His distress signal was answered, and how!! Players were sent in from all over the area until he had almost more talent than he knew what to do with. It seems that the navy made one slip, however. An army gen eral got wind of the way things were faring and shipped in the backfield of undefeated Randolph field team of Bill Dudley & Co. He added Jack Jacobs from March field and some other ex-big time men. So now it’s All-American against All-American. Game Eagerly Awaited Servicemen in the Islands are eagerly awaiting this game and those who manage to secure enough space to sit in will have something to talk about for years. Incidentally no civilians will be ad mitted so don’t try to catch the next Clipper to Honolulu. “TEX” OLIVER Former U. of O. football coach, now a lieutenant commander in the navy will coach the Navy All-Stars in their game with Army at Honolulu this Sunday. George Varoff. ex-Oregon track captain and one-time indoor and outdoor pole vault champion of the world, has been reported missing in action over China. While at Oregon, Varoff eclipsed his prep vaulting record of 13 feet 3 inches and went on to Princeton to take the world and intercolle giate records in 1936. He leaped 14 feet 6 inches to better Keith Brown's (Yale) mark by one and one-half inches. Later he leaped 14 feet 4% inches in Boston to break the indoor record. Varoff was a member of the 1936 American Olympic team that went to Berlin and leaped second to Cornelius Warmerdam of Cali fornia, who is the present world's champion. The pair toured Europe with the United States team. Varoff enlisted in the air corps in 1941. He was commissioned in October of that year as a second lieutenant and later participated j in action in the 2ndia-Burma-China air sectors. Huskies Dump Beavers Led by two speedy, driving fresh man guards, the University of Washington nosed out Oregon State 48 to 45 at Seattle last night. Bob Jorgenson and Norn Carno vale paced the Husky attack. The lead changed back and forth dur ing the game with Washington holding a one-point lead at half time 28-27. This was the first con ference game of the season for both teams. They meet again to night at Seattle. JIM BARTELT He was all-state forward at Ash land last year and is one of the three starting freshmen on this year’s Oregon five. Webfeet Make Up Halftime Deficiency With time running out on them, the Ducks came back in the closing seconds last night to squeak by the University of Idaho Vandals 42 to 40. It took a late game rally, which the Webfoots showed many times during their preseason games, to safely stow the game in the win column for Oregon. Trailing almost all of the game, Oregon’s last-mintue spurt was just a little too much for the Vandals. Both teams showed lack of experience with their lineups composed mainly of fresh men. It was the first chance of the season in the conference for both teams, and it gives the Ducks a good start in a season that will be full of upsets for everybody. Captain Bob Hamilton was the big gun in the Webfool attack, leading them in scoring with 12 counters. John Taylor of the Vandals was the top point man of the night with 13. The two teams play again tonight at Moscow, and then Ore gon moves over to Pullman for a two-game series with the veteran Washington State Cougar five. 'Babe’ Horrell Quits Post At UCLA In a surprise statement the UCLA student board of control Thursday announced the resigna tion of Coach Edwin C. (Babe) Horrell, who led the Bruin's only Rose Bowl game. Horrell’s resignation is effective March 1, 1945. He'took over the reins as head football coach on De cember 1, 1938. Probably his best season was in 1939 when his team won six games, lost none and tied four. His six season record was 24 wins, 31 losses and six ties. League Standings W L Pet.
