Page 16 DAILY EMERALD Friday, August 21, 1942 By MARGE ROBINSON Military reserve programs open to University of Oregon students now are functioning on a more widespread basis than ever be fore, with five branches estab lished and a sixth under consider ation by the government. The five divisions available are the army enlisted reserve corps, the army air corps reserve (both fly ing officer and ground officer branches), the naval V-l and V-7 reserves (deck and engineer offi cers’ training), the naval V-5 re serve (naval flight training), the marine reserve corps. A coast guard reserve, now in the tenta tive stage, may be completely or ganized by fall, according to Dr. Carl Kossack, instructor in mathematics and adviser on the reserve branches. All University men under 20 years of age, including freshmen, have opportunity to enlist in any one of the five reserves if they can qualify. At the beginning of fall term, possibly during fresh man week, a joint military pro curement board will visit the campus to explain the various programs and to complete enlist ments. Procedure Listed Students over 20, i.e., those subject to selective service, can enlist in the reserve programs immediately this summer in the following manner: (1) Army enlisted reserve: Students living in Oregon should arrange to come to the Univer sity campus on any Tuesday' or Thursday morning and report to the ROTC building to begin en listment procedure. (Those 20 years old must obtain a parent’s consent blank before reporting for enlistment. These blanks may be secured by writing to Major W. S. Averill, c-o ROTC, Uni versity of Oregon, Eugene. They must be signed and notarised, then brought to the campus when the student reports). Enlistment procedure includes a physical examination; a state ment from the registrar certify ing former enrollment in the University; filling out an appli cation form; and a personal in terview before a faculty com mitee authorized to pass on the student’s qualifications. (2) Army air corps reserve: Students should report either to the aviation cadet examining board, room 323 of the main post office building in Portland, or to the Portland or Pendleton air bases. (3) Classes V-l and V-7 of the naval reserve: Students should report to their local naval re cruiting office for the V-l pro gram for freshmen and sopho mores. Juniors and seniors inter ested in the V-7 branch should report to the naval recruiting of fice, U. S. courthouse, Portland. (4) Class V-5 of the naval re serve: Freshmen and sophomores interested in this program, naval aviation, must enlist in the V-l class, from which they will later be transferred to V-5. Juniors and seniors may report to their local naval recruiting office. (5) Marine reserve: Those in terested in applying should report - Spring Term Grades Refute War s Harm War-time emergencies appar ently had little effect on the cam pus brains. A new all-time record of /3 students emerged from a crowd ed spring term this year with a 4-pcint GPA, according to an an nouncement from Clifford L Constance, assistant registrar. A total of 205 were placed on the spring term honor roll. This compares with 206 for winter term and 185 for spring term, 1941. to the marine recruiting office, U. S. court house, Portland. (6) Coast guard reserve: Still in the formulative stage, there fore no enlistments during the summer. If additional information is re quired, students may write to Dr. Carl Kossack, University of Ore gon, Eugene. Dr. Kossack reported that at a meeting of faculty representa tives in the ninth corps area with a board from Washington, D. C., in San Francisco the latter part of July it was announced that ap plications for the communica tions division of the army air corps are still being considered. This announcement is of interest to men enrolled in physics, which UO Students. Get NYA Aid Although national NYA allot ments have been cut to $5,000, 000, for 1942-43, one-half the sum of the previous year, the Uni versity of Oregon will receive some of this aid for needy stu dents, Karl W. Onthank, dean of personnel, announced this week. The University campus re ceived $32,145 last year for 411 students who received work. The Oregon allotment for 1942-43 has not yet been set, but it probably will be a reduction of 50 per cerd^ Dean Onthank said. Work through NYA is limited to students who “without that as sistance cannot otherwise attend college.’’ Despite cuts, it is pre dicted that additional campus jobs will be available to accom modate all those who want work. is required for communications work. Students who enlist in the army enlisted reserve corps will take basic ROTC courses as freshmen and sophomores.
