Military reserve programs open
to University of Oregon students
now are functioning on a more
widespread basis than ever be
fore, with five branches estab
lished and a sixth under consider
ation by the government. The
five divisions available are the
army enlisted reserve corps, the
army air corps reserve (both fly
ing officer and ground officer
branches), the naval V-l and V-7
reserves (deck and engineer offi
cers’ training), the naval V-5 re
serve (naval flight training), the
marine reserve corps. A coast
guard reserve, now in the tenta
tive stage, may be completely or
ganized by fall, according to Dr.
Carl Kossack, instructor in
mathematics and adviser on the
reserve branches.
All University men under 20
years of age, including freshmen,
have opportunity to enlist in any
one of the five reserves if they
can qualify. At the beginning of
fall term, possibly during fresh
man week, a joint military pro
curement board will visit the
campus to explain the various
programs and to complete enlist
ments.
Procedure Listed
Students over 20, i.e., those
subject to selective service, can
enlist in the reserve programs
immediately this summer in the
following manner:
(1) Army enlisted reserve:
Students living in Oregon should
arrange to come to the Univer
sity campus on any Tuesday' or
Thursday morning and report to
the ROTC building to begin en
listment procedure. (Those 20
years old must obtain a parent’s
consent blank before reporting
for enlistment. These blanks may
be secured by writing to Major
W. S. Averill, c-o ROTC, Uni
versity of Oregon, Eugene. They
must be signed and notarised,
then brought to the campus when
the student reports).
Enlistment procedure includes
a physical examination; a state
ment from the registrar certify
ing former enrollment in the
University; filling out an appli
cation form; and a personal in
terview before a faculty com
mitee authorized to pass on the
student’s qualifications.
Rules Set
Since this committee meets
only on Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons and since the applica
tion forms must be complete be
fore an applicant is considered,
it is essential that students re

Get NYA Aid
Although national NYA allot
ments have been cut to $5,000,
000, for 1942-43, one-half the sum
of the previous year, the Uni
versity of Oregon will receive
some of this aid for needy stu
dents, Karl W. Onthank, dean of
personnel, announced this week.
The University campus re
ceived $32,145 last year for 411
students who received work. The
Oregon allotment for 1942-43 has
not yet been set, but it probably
will be a reduction of 50 per cerd^
Dean Onthank said.

to students who “without that as

college.’’ Despite cuts, it is pre

Students who enlist in the
army enlisted reserve corps will
take basic ROTC courses as
freshmen and sophomores. Those
who become advanced military
students in the future will auto

listed reserves; however, juniors
and seniors need not be in ad

program..
