Various Vacations Dazzle Young Toad By JOEY CHRYSTALL “It’s ghastly, Daff,” Toad looked up from her French hook. “What am I going to do this summer?” Daphne knew Toad too well to assume that she had been studying French just because she had a French book in her hands, but she failed to follow Toad’s train of thought. “What made you think of that?” she asked, not unreasonably, she thought. “Oh, they’re talking about some roast goose here and it re minds me of once when we were playing tennis there was this burnt-potato smell in the air. I mean, it wasn’t exactly in the summer, but tennis is the kind of game you play in the summer » . . see?” Toad finished brightly. “Yes, how dense of me. You also showed a poor choice of words when you said ‘find.’ The word is ‘choose.’ The list of things I could do this summer, by latest reports, comes to about seventy-six. I could delight my parents and amuse myself by getting a job. I could broaden my experience and my . . . er . . . vocabulary by traveling. I could win fame and fortune for myself by traveling and writing a book. Or I could just write a book anyway. I could stay home and go swim ming and get brown and ...” ‘‘Improve your croquet?” Toad was sputtering something about good looks, so Daphne continued hastily. ‘‘If you want my opinion, Toad, I think the travel sounds like the most fun. Why don’t you start mapping out your trip now ? Why don’t you pop over to the libe and see if there are any books there about it ? There must be, I mean, they have so many books ... do you want to bor row my card?” Toad sighed patiently. ‘‘Okay, Daff, I see what you mean.” She opened her French book again. Morris Carter received the $25 second prize. All entries spoke on "The Federal Rules of Civil Pro cedure Should (or Should Not) be Adopted in Oregon.’’ Both winners spoke in favor of the topic. Judges were three Eu gene lawyers, S. M. Calkins, G. Bernhard Fedde, and Donald R. Husband. Clubs Hear Vargas A. A.
