CIVIL WAR FLARES AGAIN Oregon Leads OSC In 67 Games Played In History, 34 to 33 Beavers, Only One Behind, Hope to Even Count, Tonight; Won 3 Out of 4 Last Year; Rivalry Dates Back to 1917 When Oregon's gigantic Web foots and Oregon State's colossal Beavers square off in the Igloo tonight something more than un disputed leadership of the northern division will be at stake. Unnoticed in the reams of pub licity concerning the importance of the game’s outcome to the con ference title chase is the fact that of 67 previous court engagements between the two schools Oregon has won exactly one more than Oregon State. The Ducks have been returned victorious 34 times since “civil war” hoop rivalry be gan back in 1917, and the Staters have triumphed on 33 occasions. OSC May Knot Record Thus a win for Oregon State in this evening's fracas will put the Corvallis cagers even with the Webfoots in all-time standings. Should the Goliaths of Howard Hobson thump the Beavers their narrow margin will be bolstered materially. The coast conference was formed in 1915, blit the Oregon schools didn't meet in basketball until two years later. Rivalry has been even stephen most of the way. Last win ter the Beavers won three of four games. Several times in past seasons the Webfoots and Staters have battled for conference leadership, but in recent years Oregon has floundered in the depths while the Corvallis crew brought home division titles. The first meeting last season, at Corvallis, found the two teams tied for first, but the Beavers were so definitely superior that they romped to an overwhelming 47-to 18 victory. This year, by every possible reckoning, they are even. Glass may lose, through dirt, as much as 50 per cent of its efficien cy within six months. The roof on McArthur court will be aquiver from the opening whistle to the final gun. The game’s bound to be a wonder from the spectators standpoint what with a couple of squads of skyscraping coast championship timber roaring through 40 heated minutes of the most gruelling play imaginable. And then when the regular playing period is over there will be a short rest while the battlers recuperate for one, maybe two, overtime periods. Yes, it’s my haywire opinion that it’s going to be the greatest of all great games that have been played in the history of the civil wars between the College and the University. I’ll have to give the Beavers me noa in mis one, dui iney wm drop tne rest of their games to the Ducks who will roar to the north west championship.
