(Continued from rage 1). aeathesis among adults vary, but the average, under varying conditions of age and sex, range from nine to 15 per cent. The frequency among adolescents has been found as high as 25 per cent. It seems probable then, that many cases of aynaesthesis disappear when the sub ject reaches maturity. Several valuable generalizations from experimental data have been made by Dr. Wheeler. Some of them may be summarized as follows: first, synaesthesis may be permanent as far as tests show; second,4 in colored hearing, tones of high pitch are asso ciated with bright or light colors and tones of low pitch are associated with dull or dark colors; third, synaesthetic associations are not. as a rule, revers ible; fourth the phenomena brings in early childhood. That there is no uniformity, among different individuals, in the hues which are associated with tones of like quali ity or pitch, and that various experi mental methods have failed to throw light upon the problem of . ultimate na ture of synaesthesis or upon its origin are some of the conclusions drawn by Dr. Whether, in a pamphlet previous to the present research. Wheeler’s evidence shows it is peculiar development in the mind of the process of understanding, which is a difficult psychological prob lem. Since intelligence depends so much ! on the ability to derive meaning, re search on this point is very important and practical, Research on this sub ject may appear useless, but it is ex tremely valuable to science. One of the best ways to understand normal and or dinary phenomena is to analyze and study the laws governing unusual and abnormal phenomena, d e c 1 a red Dr. Wheeler in discussing the meaning of his work. Usually when one hears, sees, tastes and smells the ordinary experi ences results. Hut those who have syn testhesis get more than common experi ence from their sensory preceptious. One man sees a flash of yellow light when ever he hears the piano, and the experi ence has endured 20 years. Now yel low light and certain piano tones have become identical. The research of Dr. Wheeler on this subject is an important contribution to scientific knowledge, and it will do much to remove the confusion and falsity of former theories.
