BEULAH CLARK PLANS ON CHAUTAUQUA TOUR Major In School of Music Will Leave During Term to Join Ellison White Company. Beulah Lorraine Clark, Alpha Delta p; aIKi sophomore iu the school of music, will leave the University this term to act as piano accompanist to a mixed quartet in the Ellison-White six dav coast Chautauqua tour. The tour v,ill last five months and will include California, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Montana. Idaho and Wyoming. Miss Clark’s first engagement will be ' at San Fernando. California. During the tour she will also take the part of n flute soloist and will also play obli gatos on the flute. Mary Adele Hays, a coloratura soprano, will be the chief soloist on the trip. She is well known in connection with Chautauqua work, and took the tour last year. Miss Clark is a member of the Mu Chi musical fraternity and is well known on the University campus for her musical talent, having been active in concert work and in the orchestra ever since her entrance in the University. Her home is in Portland. advertising poster PRIZE CONTEST OPEN Extension Division Gives $5.00 for Best Bill to Display in High School and Public Places. John C. Almack, of the extension di vision, ,has announced that a five dol lar prize will be given to any Univer sity student who turns in the best pos ter that can be used for advertising purposes for the extension depart ment. The plan is to have cuts made of the poster and have prints placed in all high schools, post offices, and all of the public places in the state. Any desired information will be fur nished to students who are interested in the prize by the extension division. This poster can be of any type, but must be of not more than three colors and must be turned in to the extension division before May 1. The contest is open to all University students. Mr. Almack said that this should be of particular interest to the students not only because there is an honor attached to it and because the posters will be circulated all over the state, but it is doing something for the University. i GIRLS RESERVE INITIATE Membership About 10,000; Mabyl Wei i *er Charge of Eugene Group. The Girls’ Reserve, an organization for girls of high school age, had their first initiation at the Y. W. C. A. bun galow Friday evening. This organization includes about 10,000 girls throughout the northwest and is directed by Miss Eleanor Holgate. girls work secretary for this field. Miss Mabyl Weller has charge of the different groups in Eu gene. After the initiation the girls served a banquet. Ruth Miller had charge of the plans for this. The following guests I were invited: Miss Tirza Dinsdale, Y. ! W. C. A. secretary; Miss Ethel Wake I field and Miss M. B. Goodall, both j junior high school teachers: Miss Eleanor j Holgate, director; Miss Mabyl Weller, leader; Miss Ruth Benson, national Y. W. C. A. secretary, and Mrs. Winona Lambert Stone, advisor for the girls. 77 SUSPENDED AT BIDDLE. Seventy-seven students of Biddle Uni versity, North Carolina, have been sus pended as a result of a “student strike” which has been in effect since last Wed nesday. The strike was called because ! of the suspension of a member of the senior class. Students declared that this was only the “last straw” in a series of unsatisfactory acts on the part of the faculty. The committee on graduation defici encies lias just announced changes in the rules regarding the granting of cred it for beginning languages which have previously been taken in high schools. | This action came as the result of a pc- ! titiou signed by approximately 25 stu dents. The petition was referred to the committee by the faculty at its regular meeting on January 6. 1921. The committee voted that the follow ing rules should apply to the petitioners and should be in force in the future: - (1) Students, who have entrance credits for two years of high school French or Spanish, take the second year in college. No credit is given, if they re peat the first year’s work in college. (2) Students, who have entrance icredit for one year of high school French or Spanish, take the third term work in college. No credit is given for the first half year, if the first year's work is repeated,in college, but credit is given for the second half year hours.) (3) Students, who have entrance credit for three years of high school French or Spanish, take third year courses in college. No credit is given if the second year is repeated in col lege.
