Hour Nursery Care, 9:30 & 11:00 A.M. in the Sutherlin area, the high school band and chorus will take part in the program which starts at 8 p.m. A feature of the program will be two living pictures, provided by people of the community. Tomorrow, the Drain chapter of the Future Farmers of Amer ica combine their talents with the Drain Chamber of Com merce for what they call a "Holiday Shoppers" Festival. A barbecue will be staged from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Chev rolet showroom. Prizes will be awarded, and the Chamber sponsored free movie matinee has been ilated. Also tomo-row, the Sunnydale Grange will hold its annual Christmas (arty at 7:30 p.m. Santa Claus will be there also. Sera Ttble Dub In the sou hern part of the county on Saturday, the Myr tle Creek Chamber of Com merce has planned a turkey scramble in which snowballs will be dropped in the streets. About half a dozen of these snowballs will contain notice that the holder wins a live tur key. The turkey grab starts at 1:30 p.m. On the following Saturday, (Dec. 19), the Chamber and local businesses will distribute 100 silver dollars to residents in a contest. Myrtle Creek too, has plan ned a free children's movie. This one will take place Dec. 23. Showings are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Roseburg has alread;' held one in Roseburg. Other help for the needy is' also a major part of the Christ mas effort in the county. In Roseburg, the Salvation Army manned kettles are al ready reaping their Christmas harvest. The Christmas appeal designed to raise funds for the needy on a year-around basis, Of course, it will also make Christmas a warmer and hap pier one for many needy lam ilies at Christmas. Capt. Lester Craddock, commanding ' officer of the Roseburg corps of the P.alvation army, reports Ray Doerner is chairman of the Christmas committee for the SA this year. Working closely with him are members of the SA advisory board, headed by chairman Arthur McGhehey Other groups snd service clubs of the community are expected to help again in the kettle ap peal. The Salvation Army also works closely with the annual Community Christmas Commit tee which is set up to assist in gathering food for the needy and making certain that all the. under-privileged are helped Saturday is the deadline for submitting names for baskets for the Community Christmas organization. Anyone knowing of a needy family may phone Mrs. Robert (Vera) Cox at 672 1227 or to the Elks Lodge spe cial number, 672-4211. Home lighting contests are also on the agenda for another year. The Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce, in con-! junction with the Pacific Pow er & Light Co., will be sponsor ing such a contest in Roseburg. The Sutherlin Business and Professional Women's Club will join its forces with PP&L for the contest there, and the Oak land Garden Club plans a sim ilar contest in Oakland. Other communities are' expected to follow suit. Judging at Suther lin is scheduled Dec. 19; at Oakland Dec. 22. The Roseburg date has not yet been announced. Music, of course, will be an integral part of the Christmas season. The Roseburg High School Chorus, more melodious thin ever, stages its annual Christmas concert next Thurs day. It has already sung be fore service groups. Monday night at 7, the Can- yonville Bible Academy choir and . several church choral groups will give a concert from the stage i.t the rear of the Myrtle Creek Post Office. An other concert made up of ehurch quartets and others has been planned at the same place the following Friday night at 7. Still pending at Reedsport is a decision on location of a new garbage disposal site made nec essary because of expiration of a present lease on Dec. 31. Clarence Hahn, garbage franchise holder, until that date will operato on a lease from International Paper Co. which has provided the site now in use. The timber company at an earlier meeting of the city council served notice that it was getting out of the garbage business, according to Dawn Peseau, correspondent. At this week's meeting of the city council, City Attorney Wil liam Jaync told members that Ihc Douglas County Court s sti pulation that the City of'Reeds port furnish a land fill site is not hard and fast." He report ed on informal talks with county court members, held in lieu of the formal discussions to re-ne gotiate the city-county landfill garbage disposal issue.
