(UPI Telephoto) Rejection Of U.S. Protest Seen As Firm Russ Stand MOSCOW (UPI)-The Soviet rejection of a U.S. protest over the blockade of a Berlin-bound troop convoy was seen today as another indication Russia in tends to stand firm in its deal ings with the West, despite talk of better relations. A Soviet foreign ministry note said Thursday the Nov. 6 protest was unwarranted and blamed the 4l-hour delay of the U.S. Army convoy on "the attempt of American service men to break the existing rules for the transit of personnel through the Soviet checkpoint on tho East-West German bor dcr.' The Soviet action was made public by Tass, the official news agency, only a few hours after Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev called for a joint U.S.-Sovict ef forts to solve tho world's prob lems through peaceful settle ment of outstanding disputes. The rejection, however, came as no surprise to western ob servers here. They recalled Mrs. Rose Zachary Mrs. nose (Stovall) Zachary, 74, formor resident of Hose burg,, died Tuesday at her homo in Prcscott, Ariz. Mrs. Zachary was the mother of James Stovall of Ttoseburg. She was born in 1889 in Wllks bury, N.C. She moved to Prcs cott nine years ago from Al berta, Canada, where she and her late husband had home steaded for 27 years. Prior to moving to Canada In 1D27, Mrs. Zachary had lived with her late husband, Robert Walter Stovall, in Alexander's Addition in Rose- burg, the area which -was later converted to umpqua Park and tho Fairgrounds. She was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church, ' Mrs. Znchary is survived by four sons including James, Fred Stovall of Edmonton, Alber ta, Canada and Clarence Stovall, now serving with the U.S. Navy nt Long Beach, Calif.; two dauchtcrs, Mrs Leonard (Mary) Ross of Pros rott and Mrs. Georgia Apfcl of Bell, Calif.; two sisters, three brothers, 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. According to latest reports, funeral services were pending nt Widmer Mortuary in Prcscott. Khrushchev's inflexible stand while the 44-man convoy was being held up. Firo behavior patterns will be studied, as well as tho exposure and proper application of mas ter streams on the exterior of the building, A total of 45 firemen are ex pected to take part in the two day program. , Pickles Passe For Pregnancy SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - Pickles are passe for preg nancy, a noted anthropologist said today. Speaking before a meeting of the American Anthropological Assn. which is holding its 62nd annual conference in San Francisco Dr. Steven Polgar of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America said that in a study he conducted in the Bay area into the eating habits of pregnant women only nine per cent named pickles as their favorite food. Polgar told tho group that 30 por cent of tho women inter viewed named fruit juices as their most popular food while expecting. Meat and fish polled close second place. He said on a national level pickles ranked in fifth place as1 tho food most craved by preg nant women. County Officials To Attend School Meet At Mt. Hood Four Douglas County school officials, along with a three- man delegation from Roseburg, will attend a special Tri-State Conference on the evaluation of instructional media programs at Timberline Lodge near Mt. Hood Sunday-Tuesday. Involving representatives from throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho, attendance is limit ed to official delegates from each area. County Supt. of Schools Kenneth Barneburg will head the county-wide delega Hon. Also attending will be Myrtle Creek Elementary School Principal Ray Coffen berry, Reedsport Elementary District Supt. Thomas Hucbner and Winston Upper Elementary Principal William Hedrick. All of these men have been instrumental in the groundwork for establishment of a county wide curriculum materials cen ter. LaDuke Thursday was awarded damges of $2,000 from Douglas County on trial jury verdict as the result of an accident in which he suffer ed injuries when his automo bile left the county highway. Young which Theft Misplaced The car of Charles J, of 461 W. Broccoli St. had been reported vandalized and several articles stolen ear lier this week, was not on the lot of Billy Mohr at that time it was reported. Mohr said the car had been taken there temp orarily, then moved at the own er's request prior to the theft of battery, carburator and oth er items. Weather To Be Normal The five-dry weather forecast according to the Weather Bu reau station at the Roscburg airport calls for temperatures averaging near normal and for normal amounts of rain. IT P4YS TO PATRON IZE NEWS-SEVIEW ADVERTISERS Castro Commies Wreck Venezuela Headquarters CORO, Venezuela (UPI) Castro Communist dynamiters wrecked the headquarters of the Falcon state Chamber of Commerce early today and bombed other establishments in this northwestern provincial capital. There was no immediate re port of casualties. The chamber offices were de stroyed by the blast, and three adjacent shops in the Miranda Hotel building were damaged. The other bombs were less pow erful and caused only minor damage. A policeman was killed in Valencia during on attempted bank robbery, but It was not certain Immediately whether the thieves were Communists. The city's Ma gallancs district was blacked out for several hours by the power-station attack, but serv ice was restored early today. A woman wounded in Tues day's outbreak of terror in Ca racas died Thursday night, in creasing the toll of Communist activity in the national capital to 25 killed and more than 120 wounded in three days. Troops and- police combing the Caracas slums arrested 10 suspected terrorists. More than 350 persons have been arrested in the capital this week. The Communists, having tried unsuccessfully for two years to overthrow President Romulo Betancourt, ore now trying to prevent the holding of the Dec. 1 election which will choose his successor. Navy May Try To Raise U2 KEY WEST, Fla. (UPI)-The Navy said a salvage ship might try to bring up today the wreck age Of a U2 "spy" plane that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico while returning from a recon naissance mission over Cuba. An Air Force search contin ued for the missing pilot of the high-flying jet plane, Capt. Joe G. Hyde Jr., 33, of La Grange, Ga. There were hopes that Hyde may have ejected from the plane, which the Strategic Air Command (SAC) said appar ently experienced mechanical failure, in a life jacket and took; refuge on one of the numerous) coral reefs in the tropical waters. Navy divers found the wreck age Thursday In about 100 feet of water 40 miles northwest of Key West, and strict security measures were put into effect in the area. ! Informed sources said the sleek craft was on a surveil lance flight over Cuba, a rou tine procedure since the U2's discovered Soviet missiles ont the Communist island in Octo ber, 1962, forcing a showdown! that brought removal of the weapons. Havana Radio reported the crash Thursday but did not mention the plane's mission. The U2 went down in the Gulf about 150 miles north of the Cuban capital. $330 doctor costs and $450 loss of wages per month for a total wage loss of $3,150. However, the county is liable for dam ages only to the amount of $2,- 000. The accident took place Aug. 21, 1962 on County Road 47, known as the Lookingglass Road at a bridge three miles north of Brockway. LaDuke al leged that a defect in the road was responsible for his acci dent and therefore the county was negligent and liable. He asserted there was a sunk en grade at the end ol tne bridge, which, when his right wheel and tire struck the sunk en portion, caused the spindle pin of the right front wheel and axle assembly to give way, causing his vehicle to go out of control. It left the roadway and crashed into rocks and terrain along the roadway then went into the ditch. The trial was conducted be fore Circuit Judge Don H. Sanders. School Budgets To Be Reviewed Four special conferences planned to present details on new school budget and elec tions laws to district school boards and administrators will be held during December and January in Douglas County. The conferences will be pre sented by Matt Campbell, as sistant county superintendent of schools. The first will be held at Yon- calla for school districts 1, 22, 32 and 34 on Dee.' 2. The second will be at the Reedsport High School library on Dec. 4 for districts 9, 105 125 and UH 13. The Roseburg meeting will be held at Fir Grove Elementary School on Dec. 9 for districts 4, 12, 21, 45, 116 and 130. The final conference will be at the Tri-City School on Jan. 6 for district 9, 15, 19, 70 and 77. All meetings will start at 7:30 p.m. Iran Protests Loss Of Plane TEHRAN, Iran (UPD-Iran. ,'ian officials awaited a reply to day irom tne Soviet Union to a protest note charging a Soviet fighter plane shot down an Iran ian civilian plane 15 miles inside Iranian territory. The note was sent Thursday night protesting the incident, which was said to have oc curred near the border town of Darrahgez. (In Moscow, there was no pubUc acknowledgment of the Iranian protest note.) Iranian officials charged that three Soviet Mig jet fighters streaked across the border in the attack on the plane, which was conducting aerial map sur veys. They said the pilot was not aware of the Russian craft until one of them opened fire with machine guns. The Iranian plane crashed, the officials said, killing t h e two map surveyors aboard.
