Rejection Of U.S. Protest
Seen As Firm Russ Stand
MOSCOW (UPI)-The Soviet
rejection of a U.S. protest over
the blockade of a Berlin-bound
troop convoy was seen today as
another indication Russia in

The Soviet action was made

agency, only a few hours after
Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev
called for a joint U.S.-Sovict ef

ment of outstanding disputes.
The rejection, however, came
as no surprise to western ob
servers here. They recalled
Mrs. Rose Zachary
Mrs. nose (Stovall) Zachary,
74, formor resident of Hose
burg,, died Tuesday at her
homo in Prcscott, Ariz. Mrs.
Zachary was the mother of
James Stovall of Ttoseburg.
She was born in 1889 in Wllks
bury, N.C. She moved to Prcs
cott nine years ago from Al
berta, Canada, where she and
her late husband had home
steaded for 27 years. Prior to
moving to Canada In 1D27, Mrs.
Zachary had lived with her late
husband, Robert Walter Stovall,
in Alexander's Addition in Rose-
burg, the area which -was later
converted to umpqua Park and
tho Fairgrounds. She was a
member of the Pilgrim Holiness
Church, '
Mrs. Znchary is survived by
four sons including James, Fred
Stovall of Edmonton, Alber
ta, Canada and Clarence
Stovall, now serving with the
U.S. Navy nt Long Beach,
Calif.; two dauchtcrs, Mrs
Leonard (Mary) Ross of Pros
rott and Mrs. Georgia Apfcl of
Bell, Calif.; two sisters, three
brothers, 12 grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
According to latest reports,
funeral services were pending

A total of 45 firemen are ex
pected to take part in the two

Pickles are passe for preg
nancy, a noted anthropologist
said today.
Speaking before a meeting of
the American Anthropological
Assn. which is holding its
62nd annual conference in San
Francisco Dr. Steven Polgar
of the Planned Parenthood
Federation of America said that
in a study he conducted in the
Bay area into the eating habits
of pregnant women only nine
per cent named pickles as their
favorite food.
Polgar told tho group that 30
por cent of tho women inter
viewed named fruit juices as
their most popular food while
expecting. Meat and fish polled
close second place.
He said on a national level
pickles ranked in fifth place as1
tho food most craved by preg
nant women.

KEY WEST, Fla. (UPI)-The
Navy said a salvage ship might
try to bring up today the wreck
age Of a U2 "spy" plane that
crashed into the Gulf of Mexico
while returning from a recon
naissance mission over Cuba.

high-flying jet plane, Capt. Joe
G. Hyde Jr., 33, of La Grange,
Ga.
There were hopes that Hyde
may have ejected from the
plane, which the Strategic Air
Command (SAC) said appar
ently experienced mechanical

refuge on one of the numerous)

fore Circuit Judge Don H.
Sanders. The jury took the case
at 2:43 p.m. and returned its
verdict on a 11-1 vote in favor
of the plaintiff at 4:07 p.m.

The final conference will be

Iran Protests

TEHRAN, Iran (UPD-Iran.
,'ian officials awaited a reply to

protest note charging a Soviet
fighter plane shot down an Iran
ian civilian plane 15 miles inside
Iranian territory.
The note was sent Thursday
night protesting the incident,
which was said to have oc
curred near the border town of
Darrahgez.
(In Moscow, there was no
pubUc acknowledgment of the
Iranian protest note.)
Iranian officials charged that
three Soviet Mig jet fighters
streaked across the border in
the attack on the plane, which
was conducting aerial map sur
veys. They said the pilot was
not aware of the Russian craft
until one of them opened fire
with machine guns.
The Iranian plane crashed,
the officials said, killing t h e
two map surveyors aboard. The
pilot was thrown clear but se
riously injured, they said.
