Helicopter Spraying Aids Forest Growth Editor's Note: A helicopter spraying project was carried out recently on the Umpqua National Forest to destroy brush and pro vide new life and vigor for. the forest's conifer trees. The chemical, 2,4,5-T, acts swift ly to increase profitable production on the forest lands. ' What lies behind this forestry program that brings death to en croaching brush and new life to a growing forest? Donald Darling, of the Umpqua National Forest staff, provides this answer in this article. By DONALD R. DARLING Supervisor's Office Umpqua National Forest The forests that clothe the North west were a long time developing. In some areas devastating fires were followed by grass, brush and, finally, the old-growth forest as we know it. In other areas, where no fires occurred, huge monarchs of the forest were toppled by wind throw and decay. In both cases, nature's leisure pace often permit ted lands to be idle for years be fore new iorests would rise to re place the old. A variety of brush, ferns and briars slowed the forest reproduction processes. Just Like Crop The farmer who tolerates weeds among his crops cannot prosper. For equally compelling economic reasons, foresters cannot tolerate idle forest land. The forest indus- Winston Young Folks Start College Terms Scott Ledgerwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oren Ledgerwood of Dil- lard has left for Corvallis to enroll in his second year at Oregon State College. Methodist WSCS Meet Set At Myrtle Creek The Umpqua Sub-District meet ing of the Women's Society for Christian Service of the .Methodist Church will be held Monday at the Methodist Church in Myrtle Creek. Sessions begin at 9:15 a.m. with luncheon at 12:15. The afternoon session will conclude at 2:30. Nurs ery service will be provided. .Ail tries in the Northwest are based upon the continuous flow of usable forest products. This flow can be maintained only if all acres de voted to timber production continue to grow useful trees. The acre that produces only grass and brush for 50 years delays, by just that pe riod, the eventual harvest of use ful forest products. As the farmer cannot tolerate briars and brush in his corn fields, neither can the forester tolerate these same plants on ground that should be produc ing timber. Foresters and scientists have pondered this problem for some time. They are developing new pro cedures in their effort to maintain continuous production. Among these is the use of chemical herbicides and their application by helicopter. Recently Dr. Henry Gratkowski and foresters from the Umpqua National Forest worked together on a 250-acre project to study the effect of various chemical formu lations in destroying brush and making these areas once again available for useful tree growth. Dr. Gratkowski has spent much of his career studying brush problems and is an authority in this field. The Research Center specified the chemical formulation to be tried; the Forest Service financed the project; and results will be stud ied jointly. Chemicals Help Not only are chemicals useful in reclaiming forest land for timber production, but they are useful in accelerating growth on existing young trees, as well. Small seed lings that must compete with a dense cover of grass and brush for light and nutrients may grow only two to four inches a year. These same trees may grow from 10 to 40 inches a year when freed from such competition. Both of these goals were in view during the recent spraying project on the Umpqua National Forest. Recognizing that herbicides are in foL.- to five minutes- Pilot Elton Eby, McMinnville. flew the entire 250-acre project in two days. Flying 10 to 20 feet above the brush, he would cover an area First in one direction, then fly the same area at right angles to his initial pass. This assures a com plete coverage. The chemicals were forced, under pressure, through nozzles designed to pro duce droplets large and heavy enough to fall quickly to the ground. Guide service SHERWIN THE Roseburg Lutheran Rites Sunday Launch Building Start St. Paul's Lutheran Church will hold a ground breaking ceremony Sunday morning at its new church site adjacent to the Fremont Jun ior High School on W. Harvard Blvd. The service will begin at 11 o'clock in the cafetorium of the school. After the sermon by the pastor of the congregation, the Rev. D. W. Hinrichs, the congregation will pro ceed to the building site. After the reading of a litany of consecration the ground will be broken by vari ous officers of the congregation and by representatives of its or ganizations. , To dramatize the need of whole hearted support of the building project, the entire congregation will then break the ground by pull ing a long rope attached to a walk ing plow. After the ground break ins ceremony the congregation will enjoy a potluck fellowship meal in the school cafetorium. No worship service will be new at St. Paul's Lutheran Church this Sunday, but the Sunday school and adult Bible class will be held there at the usual 9:45 a.m. time. Construction of the first unit of the church plant by Todd Build ing Co. is expected to begin about Oct. 1. Included in the initial con struction will be a fellowship hall, 10 Sunday school rooms, kitchen, heating plant and rest rooms, at a total cost of $108,000. The sanctu ary will be added later wnn a completion goal set by 1968, bring ing the value of the total plant to around $180,000. Plans were drawn by William H. Seibert of Medford. O. L.
