(UPI Telephoto) , Spokane Indians Could Clinch PCL Title For Second Straight Time In Game Tonight Ken Venfuri, Bill Johnston Leading Pack With 66's In First Round Of Denver Open DENVER (UPI) - It has been a long drought for veteran pro fessional golfers Ken Venturi and Bill Johnston, but they were off and running today at the head of the pack in the $35,000 Denver Open. Each carded a 6 in Thurs day's first round of the 72-hole tourney over the 6,774-yard Den ver Country Club layout, good enough for a one-stroke lead. Nei ther has won a tourney since 1960 and each has pocketed only about $3,000 in winnings this year. For the 32-year-old Venturi of Crystal River, Fla., who has been hampered for two years by var ious ailments, his physical condi tion pleased him as much as his hot, four-under-par round. "I feel fine," he beamed after burning up the course with a five-undcr-par 30 on the front nine. "I've had two real bad years physically with a back ailment and tendonitis. Then, two months ago in Cleveland I was bruised in a car accident." But he feels his 66 entitled him to explain what his problem has been for the past two years. "It's tough not feeling really strong enough to play my shots," he said. "I was winning my share of tournaments in 1957-58- 59. I don't think I was king, but I was winning my share." Venturi's hot putter gave him five birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine. The 38-year-old Johnston, of Phoenix, Ariz., who doesn't play the pro circuit continuously missed only one green, never missed a fairway and used only 31 putting strokes all day. "I played better than I know how," he commented. Rex Baxter Jr., Amarillo, Tex., came in with a 67 as did Bui Eggers, Henderson, Nev., and Li onel Hebert of Lafayette, La. Ten contestants were bunched next with 68s. They Included the 1961 champion, Dave Hill of Jack son, Mich. By DAVE ROWE UPI Sports Writer The Spokane Indians could clinch their second Pacific Coast League championship at home to night when they play host to Portland. The Indians are 11V4 games in front of Hawaii in the Northern Division and have 12 games to play. It's a far different story in the Southern Division where Okla homa City's lead over Dallas-Ft. Worth is 2V4 games and three over San Diego. Thursday night, Oklahoma City shut out Dallas-Ft. Worth, 9-0; Salt Lake City nipped Hawaii, 5-4, in 10 innings; San Diego bumped Spokane, 4-1; Tacoma beat Seattle, 6-2, and Portland edged Denver, 6-1. Miles Mc Williams, called up from the Sally League, got his first PCL home run and it won the game for the Padres. The blow came in the sixth inning off Phil Ortega with two men aboard. The winning pitcher was veteran Jim Owens, who took over for starter Ray Rippelmeyer. Rippcl meyer was forced to retire in the second after being hit on the pitching hand by a line drive off. the bat of Dick Nen. The victory gave San Diego a 9-5 edge over Spokane for the season. Gene Wallace s pinch home run in the eighth was the only Spo kane score. The Salt Lake City game also was won by a home run when Billy Cowan blasted one off Ha waii's Tom Morgan in the 10th inning. The blow beat a 9:30 cur few set by both clubs before the start of the game. Bob Perry paced the 13 hit Ha waii attack with a home run and John Kennedy had three singles. Bill Ott had a home run in the second and other runs were scored on key doubles by Bob Will and Cowan. Freddie Burdette picked up the victory in relief while Morgan was the loser. Oklahoma City dune to its slim lead in the Southern Division by in the second against Dallas-Ft. Worth. That ended the scoring for both clubs. Bob Boyd banged a homer in the first with one man on and Joe Wooten got one with none aboard in the second. Dave Giusti went the distance for the 89crs, allowing only three hits. Tacoma punched across five runs in the first inning and coast ed to victory over Seattle. Ron Herbel ended an eight-game los ing streak, pitching six-hit ball. He had home run help from John Glenn, Don Gile and Bill Hain. Portland's Lew Krausse hurled a three-hit game against Denver, getting help from Aurclio Montea gudo in the sixth. There were no home runs in the game but triples by Dick Green and Hector Mar tinez each drove in two runs for the Beavers. (UPI) Roy Emerson of Australia sets out today to regain the U.S. ten nis championship, completely un awed by the new American threat led by Chuck McKinley of San Antonio, Tex., and Dennis Rals ton of Bakersficld, Calif. Emerson, 1961 champ and seed ed second to Wimbledon winner McKinley this year, hopes to give Australia its eighth straight U.S. crown. About the American threat, he said with a twinkle in his eye: "We'll just have to see about that. I'm playing as well as I ever did and I like the grass at Forest Hills. Coach Red Hickey has be moaned the fact that more of his regulars are on the injured list than are sound and healthy. From five to eight players are handi capped with various ailments. End Monty Stickles will be out for the game while doubtfuls in clude Kermit Alexander, Eddie Dove, Carl Kam merer, all backs, and John Thomas and Len Rhode, linemen. All but Stickles may see limited action. The Cowboys, on the other hand are practically at full strength with only Art Houser, veteran tackle, on the hospital list. The Forty Niners have not won a game this exhibition season while coach Tom Landry's charges scored a 17 - 14 decision over the Rams and then lost to Green Bay and Los Angeles. The Forty Niners dropped decisions to Minnesota, St. Louis and Cleve land. A crowd of 12,000 to 14,000 is expected for tonight's game, which is to be played in 75 degree temperature. Hickey is not certain who he will start at quarterback. John Brodie has been getting the call but his performance last week left something to be desired. The rest of the starters also seem to be question marks. The Forty Niners worked out Thursday afternoon and then flew here, and, aside from a short meeting today, will rest until game time. The Tcxans also went through a brief morning workout in their training camp at Forest Grove, Ore., and will take it easy until the starting whistle. The Texans have yet to beat San Francisco in prc-scason play and will shoot former U. of Pa cific quarterback Eddie LcBaron and Don Meredith at the Forty Niners. Probable offensive backficld starters in the first pro game to be played here, arc: John Brodie at quarter; Lloyd Winston and Bernie Casey at halfbacks and J. D. Smith at full for the Forty Nmcrs, and LcBaron, Amos Bui locks and Frank Clarke, half backs.with Amos Marsh at full for the Texans. Ducks' Grid Drills Start On Saturday EUGENE (UPI) Fall football practice at the University of Ore gon begins Saturday with 19 let termen heading a 63-man squad. Coach Len Casanova is well supplied with backs, but only one starting lineman, end Dick Ira walle, returns from the team that won six games, lost three and tied one last fall. The all veteran backficld in cludes Ail-American Mel Renfro and Larry Hill at halfbacks, Bob Bejiry at quarterback and Lu Bain, moved over from halfback, at the fullback spot. , Quarterback Doug Post and halfbacks H. D. Murphy, Ron Martin and Monte Fitchett also won letters last year. Imwalle will have help from three lettermen ends. They arc Rich Schwab, Paul Burleson and kicking specialist Buck Corey. Lowell Dean, Ray Johnson, Milt Kanehe and Ron Berg return at tackle, but the ranks get thinner at guard and center. Ron Straiten, out with an injury last year, is the only returning center and Ron Jones the only letterman guard. Dave Wilcox, a second unit end last year, was moved to guard in spring practice to help out. The Ducks open their season against Penn Stale Sept. 21 in Portland. Shaw, who has nine years as a pro quarterback behind him, was placed on waivers Wednesday by the Denver Broncos of the American Football League. In a telephone conversation with Jimmy Jones, sports director of television station KPTV and a former college teammate, Shaw said Denver would withdraw his name from the waiver list if he is claimed. If he is not claimed, Shaw said Denver will keep him on its inac tive list at his full salary, re ported to be about $20,000, in case either of its other quarterbacks gets hurt. The other Bronco signal-callers arc veteran Frank Tri pucka and rookie Mickey Shaugh nessy. Shaw said he also may be given a job as a player-coach.
