(UPI) Moun tain folk stewed for days about the strange camp where, it was said, people wore no clothes, worshipped no god and never got a haircut. The teen-aged campers "have long hair and sexy clothes and sometimes they wear no clothes at all," one mountaineer grum bled. Some said free love was being taught at the camp, and others reported seeing youngsters swim ming naked in a lake. Last week the mountaineers got so disgruntled they sent a council of six citizens out to the camp and got assurances that the camp ers would stay away from Ros man. But then some of the campers eame into town, and word got around that there were Negroes at the camp, called Summerlane. This, officials .said today, was the last straw for the local folk. About 400 mountaineers went into the camp, bumed down the gym nasium, threw gasoline on the lake which was reported used for nude bathing and set it afire, and rioted for nearly five hours. No Arrests The fracas started Thursday night and ended about 3 a.m. Fri- day. Gunfire shattered tne winaow of a bus, abandoned by the camp ers. One man was stabbed but was not seriously injured. There were no arrests. In New York, a spokesman for the campers, Skip Weatherford, said that when the townsfolk stormed the camp "the Rev. George Van Hilshimer and 15 oth er male and female counselors had, protected and calmed the 55 children." The children -ranged in age from Infants to 16-year-olds. The group was expected to Discoverer Of Controversial Drug Removes Application CHICAGO (UPI) The most bitterly fought medical battle of the decade took a dramatic turn Friday when the discoverer of krebiozen withdrew his applica tion for continued experimental status of the drug. The move, in effect, meant at least a temporary halt in efforts to win federal approval of the controversial cancer drug and put it on the market. Dr. Stevan Durovic, a refugee Yugoslav physician who first ex tracted the substance from the blood serum of horses 16 years ago, withdrew his application in a letter to Anthony J. Celcbreeze. secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW). He said the government had waged a fight against "an un biased clinical test" of the drug with "unheard-of pressure, the spreading of false statements to the press, an attempt to frame me and now an attempt to in dict me." (UPI) An thony (Tony Pro) Provenzano. a powerful Teamsters Union official faces a seven year prison term and $10,000 fine for extorting mon ey from an upstate New York trucking firm. Provenzano, was freed Friday under 515,000 bail pending an ap peal after sentence was imposed in federal court here. U.S. District Court Judge Rob ert Shaw lectured him sternly, then imposed the relatively severe sentence with a warning to other union otticials: 'The time has come to serve notice on those who show no re spect for the rights of others that sucn action will not be tolerated. Roseburg Church Sets Week-Long Bible Course The Church of Christ on Gar den Valley Blvd. has scheduled a week of concentrated Bible study beginning Monday, July 15, according to A. L. Lemlcy, church spokesman. Sessions will run through Sunday, July 21, with special all-day services on that date and also on this Sunday, July 14. Classes will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays. Sack lunches will be served at p.m. and at 6:45 p.m. potluck dinners will be held at Stewart Park prior to the evening classes. Main subject for the course will be "Bible Reading and Study," directed by Otis Daniel of Up land, Calif. Evangelist Leon Gar rett of Olivehurst, Calif., will be in charge of study of word usage as found in the King James ver sion of the Bible. Lemlcy will present instruction in singing of spiritual songs, including congre gational singing. Along with the Bible study por tions of the course, social prob- ems and study of atheistic ideas will be presented by laymen of the host church. According to Lemley, all resi dents of the area are invited to attend any or all of the sessions and the special Sunday services. Portland Woman Won't Remove Signs In Yard PORTLAND (UPI)-Hrs. Calif., that would meet FAA specifications. The course this year stretches 2,400 miles from Bakersfield, to Atlantic City, N. J., with check points and possible landing sites in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio and Maryland. The race ends at noon, July IT, in Atlantic City. Most of the pilots expect to complete the race in 12 hours fly ing time with three stops en route, although last year's winner, Frances Bera of Long Beach, Calif., made just one stop by tak ing advantage of weather condi tions.
