Slv ; BEAMS GO INTO PLACE Huge structural roof beams are shown being set into place this week for the new Safeway Store, a part of the Roseburg Plaza development on the old Central Junior High Grounds. Tilt-up concrete walls recently were set in place there, and this week, concrete slobs to become part of the walls were being set into place for the new Pay Less Store. (News-Review photo) Bank Debits Increase In Western Oregon Bank debits for the West Central area, including Coos, Douglas and Lane Counties, increased in May 1963, compared to May, 1962, the University of Oregon Bureau of Business Research has reported Debits for May, 1963. totaled 1257,809,167. For April 1963, the total was S244.836.391. and for May 1962, the total was $233,030,592. Goodwin ls operated the T & K Mobile Service at Winston the past five years. Cliff Aten and Grant Phillips are moving their used car business to 338 NE Garden Valley Road, onto property they own near the Vet erans Memorial Building. They will be putting up a small office building to serve as their used car business sales headquar ters. Their property there is slight ly larger than the property they have occupied on Stephens. Ellison is giving up a service station business he has operated for 17 years, having started Sept. 1, 19-16. The old station was re placed with a now modern facility in about 1955. Ellison with Jimmy Christensen will be operating their truck and car rental service, on franchise from the Hertz Rent A Car and Truck Rental service. V 1 Jet Boat Used To Haul Tractor Up Rogue River O'Dell (Deak) Miller of Glendale, who operates the Paradise Bar Ranch on the Rogue River, recent ly had a two-ton tractor brought 60 miles up the river by jet boat lor use on the rancn. It was considered a milestone in Rogue River use, since, in the past, only small capacity boats were able to navigate the river. The delivery was only part of the job, however. Miller had to maneu ver the tractor up a 150-foot bluff by hand-powered winch from the beach delivery point. He is going to use the tractor to cultivate sweet corn and other truck garden prod ucts for summer guests. The same jet boat which brought the tractor will now be used to bring sightseers, campers and fish ermen to tne raramse liar nanen Candy Maker Seeks Helper To Learn Trade Chris Shaffer has been a candy maker all his life. He has built up a thriving business during the past 10 years he has lived in Roseburg. Now with advancing years he would like to find someone interested in learning the trade and willing to put up a little investment and work with him in expanding his business. El Rancho Candies, located at 2475 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., is the name of Shaffer's business, which is being saluted during the month of July by the Roseburg (area) Chamber of Commerce. The chamber, through its payroll de velopment committee, is making an euort to seek out small businesses and help them expand if that is the owner's inclination or desire. Shaffer uses a ton of sugar a month, 4 ton of syrup, 400 pounds of peanuts and smaller amounts of other nuts and coconut in the production of his candies. He spe cializes in brittles peanut, coco nut and cashew and coconut marshallow, all of which are sold wholesale. His output totals about 24,000 bags of finished product a montn. Other Candies But he also produces several oth er types of candies which he mark ets retail at his own place of busi ness and at a candy store retail outlet, operating under the name of El Rancho Candies on SE Main St. in the Valley Hotel building at SE wasmngton. This business is owned and oner. ated by Mrs. Billie Wonsor and her daughter Lois Haire. They have a franchise with Shaffer to sell his candies. Mrs. Wonser also works parttime with Shaffer-as a candy maker. Shaffer markets his wholesale product through a jobber in Eugene serving the northern part of Ore gon; one at Prospect, serving south ern Oregon and northern Califor nia, and a third at Klamath Falls, serving that area. Most local stores handle his brit tles, as well as the large McKav chain in the Willamette Valley and Meier and prank in Portland. Dr. Novick recently moved to Winston from Myrtle Point, where he practiced dentistry for the past two years. He is a graduate of the Uni versity of Oregon Dental School in Portland. He also attended Willam ette University in Salem after six years as a dental technician in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Eu rope, Texas, Georgia and South Carolina during his service years from 1947 to 1953. Dr. Novick with his wife, Doro thy, and children, Claudia, Karen, Harry and Warren, have pur chased a home cn Division Street and Civil Bend Avenue in Winston. Mrs. Donna Mathison is employ ed as dental assistant to Dr. Novick. B. A. Young Remodeling Building On SE Stephens B. A. Young, owner of the build ing at 731 SE Stephens St., is hav ing the front and interior remodel ed for a future rental. This is the former location of the Fresh Made Damil Shop. Young is having the front remodeled to conform wilh the style of other establishments along that block, some of which he owns. Accommodations At Lemolo Lake Not Yet Ready Completion of accomodations at Lemolo Lake, scheduled for July 4, has been delayed until about the middle of July, developer Don Wil son of Roseburg has informed Glide correspondent Mrs. Arthur Selby. Unfavorable weather including late snow, did not permit getting into the area to do the work as soon as hoped for, and rains since have hampered some of the construction. There also has been some delay in receiving "A" frame beams for the lodge structure, because of the time required for drying the tim bers that make them up at a Springfield plant. Two ol tne cigni camns are com pleted and work is going ahead on the lodge building. The latter will include a grocery store, restaur ant and lounge, with rest room fa cilities. The actual candy making Is a skilled job, requiring years of train ing from rccipics some of which are his own secret formula. Ha Rtntari his mnrlrrttinf flrnit tc almost unlimited, depending upon I his ability to produce. That is why 1 he is looking for an assistant to i join him in the business and learn the trade. He said he has one man in mind who may be the answer, but full arrangements have not been made. Shaffer currently employs three persons, working five to seven hours a day. At Christmas time he produces additional amounts of box ed chocolates in 1, 2, 3 and 5 pound sizes and sometimes needs extra help. He could double production with another candy maker, he states, and that in turn would re quire additional helpers on his payroll. Standard Equipment His equipment consists of stand ard candy making equipment, in cluding cooking vats, marshmallow and cream beaters, slabs to pour the candy on, and other utensils. Shaffer started in candy making as a young man in Milwaukie, Wis. Later he went to Los An geles, where he operated a candy shop, producing many candy lines, for 18 years. But he decided he wanted to get out of the busy city. He found Roseburg to his liking, both as a city in which to live i and because ot the favorable climate. He moved Here 10 years ago, and after about four years resumed his lormer profession. They work for Chris Shaffer, who operates Rancho on SE Main St. ot SE Washington Ave. a time in one building in the east Roseburg area, then moved to his present location in the former Dale's Cafe building. His is the only candy making business of its type in this aroa, and is typical of a small-time in dustry found in many large cities but of which there are so very few in the Roseburg area. Howard's Men's Store Remodeling Completed Howard Hunsaker, owner, said the move should be completed by the end of the week. The build ing, owned by Nobel Goettel, has been remodeled at a cost, listed in the building permit, of $5,000.
