Newspaper Page TextKoufax Gets 5-3 Win Over Cards; Giants Lose 6 - 3 By United Press International Sandy Koufax' left index finger has come around so well that he now uses it to form a circle with bis thumb. That's the sign everything is perfect again and it also could be a sign the Los Angeles Dodg ers are on the way to their first National League pennant since 1959. Koufax' finger probably cost the Dodgers the pennant last year when a circulatory ailment in it forced the left-handed fast i bailer to the sidelines during July. 'But the digit doesn't seem to be bothering him now and if there's any question about it, Koufax can point to his record of 11 victories against only three defeats. He pitched the Dodgers within a game-anda-half of first place Friday night when he beat the St, Louis Cardinals 5-3 for his fourth victory in a row. Koufax struck out nine and had a four-hit shutout going until the ninth when a single, a walk and Tim McCarver's two-out homer brought reliever Ron Perranoski in from the bullpen to get the final out. Davis Hits Homer Bill Skowron singled home two runs in the first inning off loser Curt Simmons (7-3) and after the Dodgers added another run in the seventh, Tommy Davis drilled a two-run homer in the eighth for what proved to be the decisive margin. The Cardinals, however, still retained their half-game hold on first place when the Milwaukee Braves beat the second-place San Francisco Giants, 6-3. Cincinnati made it four in a row with a 3-0 win over Houston, the New York Blehm Fires No Hit Game As Mocks Claim Two Wins Mock Motors continued on the rampage in YMCA Twilight League action this week by rolling to 13-1 and 14-0 victories over the Rose burg Merchants and the Vets Em ployees. Dick Blehm twirled a no-hitter in shutting out the Vets Employees. The talented fireballer struck out 12 and issued two free passes. Dave Cellers and Dan Kinne helped pro tect the no-hitter with sparkling Horn Is Second In Broad Jump ST. LOUIS (UPI)-Former Ore gon State star Darrell Horn went 26-4 to finish second in the broad jump in the national AAU track meet Friday. Ralph Boston won the event In 26-10. Gary Stenlund of Oregon State was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 230-llVi. Southern Cali fornia's Larry Stuart won with 255-3. Glenn Wlnningham, ex - Grants Pass High School standout, was fourth in the javelin in 238-614, Oregon State s Morgan Grotn and Norm Hoffman gained the 880-yard run finals by winning their heats in 1:50.0 and 1:51.4, respectively. Former Oregon stars Dyrol Burleson and Jim Grelle ran first and third in their heat to gain the finals for the mile run. Their clockings were 4:10.3 and 4:10.7, respectively. Finals in the remaining events of the two-day meet were held today. Oregon's Paul Stuber and Terry Llewellyn were entered in the high jump. Douglas County Fairgrounds Wed. June 26, 8:30 P.M. Get Only Three Hits The Braves were held to three hits by the Giants but still won despite Orlando Cepeda's 13th and 14th homers. Milwaukee clinched the game with six runs in the fifth. Joe Torre's homer and Lee Maye's three-run triple were the key blows. Tony Clonin ger was the winner and Bob Bo lin the loser. Jim Maloney gained his 11th victory for the Reds with a four hitter over the Colts. Loser Ken Johnson matched Maloney until the eighth when the Reds rallied for all their runs. The Mets managed only four hits against the Phillies but cap italized on two Philadelphia mis plays to beat Cal McLish. Frank Thomas double home two runs in the sixth following an error by third baseman Don Demeter and the Mets scored again in the sev enth when Roy Sievers neglected to cover first base. Al Jackson hurled a seven-hitter and had two hits himself. Andre Rodgers' single with the bases full in the 10th against the Pirates gave the Cubs their fourth straight victory. Against the Roseburg Merchants, Kinne, Jack Meyers, Cellers and Kolberg each had two hits, while Don Wells and Weber divided six hits between them. Mock's took the lead in the third inning when Meyers uncorked a three-run homer. Weber drove in three counters in a sixth-inning cx plosion with a blazing three-bagger. Long tossed a brilliant one-hit tcr in leading' Riverside to an opening 6-2 triumph over East wood. In twirling the one-hitter, Long struck out eight, walked three and had his no-hitter spoiled in the fifth inning when Craig Engle sin gled. The quarter mile oval at t h e Roseburg Speedway has been pav ed and the turns have been bank ed, making the local track one of the fastest in the state. Competing against the local aces for top honors in tonight's races will be a strong contingent of driv ers from throughout Oregon and Northern California. Back to defend his 1902 driving crown will be Jay Eaton, while Don Hcin, the top driver in 1961 and runnerup last year, will also return to action. Jim Standlcy, the hard-luck driv er of 1962, is tabbed as the man to beat on the local track.
