( Roseburg Women Honored Recently Two local teachers attending tho Rtoto convention ot tho Oregon Music Teachers Association at Eu gene last week were gratified to learn that they had been awarded tho Certificate Ot Professional Ad vancement, highest rating given any member by th association. The two recipients are Gladys Strong and Ruth Trued, both local music teachers. In the atmosphere ot an Emmy Award presentation in Hollywood, there was i hushed silence when the certification chairman, Joseph Bryo of Oregon State University, read off seven names which the examining board had selected and passed at worthy of this highest distinction, tho two local teachers being among tho seven for the en tire state. A lesser award of certi fication called the Certificate Of Experience was received by 30 ome members. This award en compasses certain educational re quirement, teaching experience, syllabus exams, public perform ance and applied music, as well as, a thorough knowledge of history, pedagogy and theory. Tho Certificate of Professional Advancement comprises all this and more in order to be eligible for the htshest distinction. Firnt. the candidate must be 31 years or over to which status both local teachers grudgingly admitted and men must equal the stature of a master degree. However, a man. ters degree alone will not qualify for an award. The candidate must have contributed to the profession in one or more ot the following ac complishments: Public nerform ance of a formal nature, publica tion of a treatise on music or , similar authorship, structure of composition, research. Dedaimtncil ly capable of instructing teachers. showing exceptional skill in the art ol teaching and contributing dis tinguished service to the teachers association and the music profes sion. In other words, the Music Teachers National Association, of which the Oregon association is a part, recognizes certain incontro vertible standards to which the profession must subscribe in order to elevate the art to its highest potential of achievement, hence these certifications of merit. Ev ery teacher aspires to a certifica tion ot this high excellence. Both Miss Strong and Mrs. Trued have prepared students for sylla bus exams for many years with a remarkable record of well over 60 per cent In tho superior classifica tion. Both are engaged in success ful teaching careers, producing stu dents who themselves are now cith er teachers, pcrformors or organ ists or engaged in educational work. Many have qualified for scholarships and some havo enter- ed the vocal field, soma singing in opera. All this Is the result of thorough preparation and assidu ous effort. Students are usually grateful for a dedicated teacher's skill and ability, because if the modern concept ot more applica tion in each field is to he realized more stress must be laid to the qualifying for teachers which Includes music. In the matter of formal pdura tion, Miss Strong was graduated from Linfield College, The New England Conservatory Of Music under Arthur Koote, and received special training In piano with Ed win Hughes of New York, and with Marguriet Melville Mstnirwska and Lillian Paige and others. Mrs. Trued is a graduate of Mil land College, with graduate work at the University of Nebraska. She had special training with Dr. .Mat thew Lundquist, Albin O. Peterson and Dr. 1. Frank Krysingcr. president, 250 hours; Mrs. L. A. Lemon, Mrs. J. R. Finloy and Mrs. Robert C. Fabion, 50 hours. Introduced were: Mary Bade, grand representative to the State of Texas; Harry Smith, grand as sociate guardian to the State of Oregon;, guardian, Helen Curry; associate guardian, Floyd Ross; past associute guardian, Ole Bunch; and past guardians, Meryl Wahl and Vi Hubbcll. Following installation, refresh ments were served in the social room. Beautiful decorations in the Oriental motif were used. Mr. and Mrs. George Powers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary by holding open house at their attractive home in Win ston June 2. Relatives and friends were invited to call between 2 and 4 p.m. The three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Powers were all home for the oc casion and included: Dr. Percy Powers of Gresham; Clarence Pow ers, Roseburg, and Dr. Maxwell Powers, Oakland, Calif. The Pow ers have nine grandchildren. The beautifully tiered and dec orated golden wedding cake was habwi hv Mrs Allen Coooer. As sisting in serving the cake were Mrs. John Weiss ana Mrs. rercy Powers. George Powers and Maude Alli son were married in Great Falls, Mont., May 28, 1913. They came i Rncohurff in Mav 1823 and mov ed to Winston in 1932. Mrs. Powers is an active member ot tne Kose- Sew, Chat Club Is Entertained Mrs. Elbert Cellcrs recently en tertained the Sew and Chat Club at her Glide home. Camas WSCS Has Recent Meeting The Women's Society of Chris tian Service of the Camas Valley Methodist Church met Wednesday with Mrs. J. T. Dixon as hostess. Mrs. Ernie Wheeler gave the wor ship service, and Mrs. Guy Moore presented the lesson. There were 10 members present, and two guests, Mrs. H. J. Jenkins and daughter, Carolee. Mrs. Jenk ins sang two solos. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Wheeler.
