If Roseburg wants a big land with a big forest as the country from which its sister city in Latin Amer ica is selected, Brazil is the place. It's the largost country in South America. As a matter of fact only four countries in the world are big ger. They are the United States, the Soviet Union, China and Can ada. Brazil with an area of 3'. mil lion miles is as big as the contin ental United States, plus half of Alaska. Over half lha country is covered Uy forests. Features Vary Its 65' million people live in a country which includes geographic features ranging from lush tropical forests to scrubland and desert. Nine tenths of the country lies in the torrid tone, but latitude, winds and rainfall produce a variety of climates. Two of the most famous features of the country are its mighty river system and its new capital. The Amazon River is navigable for 2, 300 miles. Its drainage basin is most of the northern part of the country. Brasilia, the capital since 1960, is most famous because it was literal ly carved from the wilderness. Brazil Is Republic Politically, Brazil is a republic resembling that of the United States. All citizens over 18, ex cept illiterates, are allowed to vote. Primary education is free and compulsory. The constitution spe cifies that no less than 10 per cent of federal tax revenues will be de voted to education. The country is truly a melting pot of civilization. It has Caucasian, Indian, Negro and Oriental, all so thoroughly mixed over a period of centuries that it has virtually no racial discrimination. Although' church and state are separated, it is the largest Roman Catholic country in the world. The state language is Portuguese. Republic Created The country was discovered by the Portuguese in 1500 and remain ed under its domination until 1822. Unlike most of the other countries of Latin America, it shook the yoke of Portuguese domination with com paratively little bloodshed and cost. It remained an independent em pire until 1889 when the Army over threw the royal family and creat ed a republic much along the lines of the U. S. Brazilian economy is chiefly agri cultural, and its economic history has been on of boom and bust be cause of heavy dependence on a single product at a given time. It is currently undergoing a "bust" period. Inflation has become out rageous. Th country has always depend ed on agriculture, grazing and for estry. Her leading exports are cof fee, cocoa, cotton and lumber. In recent years, however, the country has been developing con siderable industrialization. With this development has come a rapid ly expanding middle class. Indus, trial production has increased threefold in the last two decades. The largest industries are food pro. cessing, textile, chemical and pharmaceutical, metallurgical, ce ment and construction and the new appliance and automotive indus tries. Brazil, which has traditionally been a friend of the United States, has eight sister city affiliations with U. The governor's staff is buried under an avalanche of telegrams, telephone calls, letters and per sonal visits. During the record 141-day ses sion, the legislature approved about 650 measures. While the session was on, the governor had five days in which to take action. Gov. Mark Hatfield now has un til June 26 to act. He already had vetoed two bills, signature. By mid-Wednesday he had sign ed 485 measures. He still had about 165 on which to act. The legisla ture adjourned 10 days ago, but some 17 bills still hadn't been sent up to the governor's office. While the legislature was in ses sion, the individual lawmakers took the brunt of lobbying for and against various proposals. When the session ended the en tire focus of attention shifted to th governor's office. The pressure won't be off until June 26, the legal deadline for action.
