( iv : ' '4 1 i ATV iff'' WALLS SET IN PLACE Another big step in construction of the new Safeway Store, a part of the Roseburg Plaza development, was taken this week when heavy crane equip ment came into town and hoisted into place the concrete walls. The cement wall sections are imbedded with decorative stone. Teeples & Thatcher, Portland, are general contrac tors for the Plaza development, which includes also the new Pay Less Drug Store on ad joining properly. The cement walls are now being poured for "tilting-up" for the latter building. (News-Review photo) LAMBS TO MARKET It's lamb shipment time in Doug las County, which is the largest sheep producing county in Oregon. Tom Findlay and his dog Spot, are shown above loading lambs at the Douglas Livestock Market, operated by Jim Lewis, at Wilbur. Total of 488 lambs were loaded out in this shipment. They averoged about 100 pounds each. They were headed easb to Swift & Co. ot Ogden, Utah. An estimated 85,000 lambs will go to market from Douglas County ranches this season, it is reported. Ship ments are just starting. The one above was the third this week. They will be going out almost every day beginning next week. local Mews Mr. and Mri. Mr. and Mrs. George Sham brook and daughter, Barbara, of Tucson, Ariz, and the former's mother, Mrs. J. L. Shambrook, of Canyonville, spent Thursday here visiting Mrs. T. B. Virden on SE Kane St. Shambrook is a cousin of Mrs. Virden. Mrs. William D. Domenighini, the former Carol Aiken, and two children of Hayward, Calif., are spending two weeks in Roseburg visiting the former's mother, Mrs. James Aiken Sr. Mrs. Aiken and son, Jerry, went as far south as Redding, Calif., to meet Mrs. Do menighini and children and brought them to Roseburg. County Judge V. T. Jackson, com missioners Elmer Mctzger and Ray Ooerner attended dedication of the W. M. Tugman state park at Eel Lake Thursday afternoon. Others attending from Roseburg included State Game Commissioner John P. and Mrs. Amacher; Charles S. Col lins, executive vice president of the Cal Orc Recreational Develop ment Dislrirt. and son. Charles C, Wilbur Wieprecht, executive secre tary of the Douglas County Park Department, and Charles V. Stan ton, editor of The News-Review. Mr. Amacher was one of the three principal speakers, representing the Oregon Game Commission of which he is a member and is for mer chairman. - California People Buy Large Ranch At Myrtle Creek Sale of what is known as the Joe Pruitt Ranch at Myrtle Crek to a California family was report ed this week. Mr. and, Mrs. D. Bradley Ratt ncr of Culver, City, Calif., are pur chasers of the 908-acre ranch properly, which lies immediately to the east of the city of Myrtle Creek. The property was purchased from Lewis Papousck. The new owners took possession June 1 Rattner is a Los Angeles business man. He and his wife have three daughters of grade school age The property is mostly ranch land with only a small amount in cultivation. Rattner, commented, however, that he is primarily in terested in having a "big back yard." The transaction was handled by Morris Cherrick, agent branch manager for Strout Realty, , BOXCARS ORDERED Plans for acquisition of 2100 new freight cars were announced to day by Union Pacific Railroad. the cars are part of an $80,- 000.000 capital expenditure to be made by the railroad in 1963. They are scheduled for delivery during the remainder of this year and I of- the first part of 1964. Station For Liquid Oxygen Operation Now Being Built The first liquid oxygen filling station ever installed west of the Mississippi River, by Air Reduc tion Pacific Co. (Airco) will be put into operation in Roseburg in early August. 1 lie new plant, to be operated under an Airco franchise uy the Oregon Welding Supply Co.. will employ about 18 persons, an in crease of six men above its present staff. The plant will be located in headquarters being constructed by J. A. Joelson & Sons for lease to Oregon Welding Supply Co. on oration and Gene Keitzman as vice president. The welding supply division of the firm was stalled on Jan. 1, 1959, when Swinford obtained the Airco franchise. The Medford of fice was opened at the same time, and in January, ItHiO. the firm took over the Airco distributership in Coos Bay. The company now op erates a fleet of 18 trucks out of its three offices, as well as pro viding all of (he tanks required for the business. The liquid oxygen storage tank will be in stalled adjacent to the rear ol me building. - Bill Swinford, president of the Oregon Welding Supply Co., said installation of this new plant will provide; increased service facilities for the firm's clients throughout southwestern Oregon by elimina ting the long-distance hauling pres ently required to bring the oxygen from Portland to Roseburg. Liquid oxygen will be shipped into Roseburg from an Airco plant in Richmond, Calif. It will arrive here and be maintained at a tem perature of 300 degrees below zero, then put throqgh the heat ex changer and vaporizer In the new plant and turned into gas, which is fed into the tanks distributed by the firm. In addition to the Roseburg of fice, the plant will service Oregon Welding Supply Co.'s offices in Medford and Coos Bay, as well as filling tanks for a Eugene firm. Swinford said the firm anticipates handling about a million cubic feet of oxygen pen month. One of the greatest advantages of the liquid oxygen process being inct.illeri here, he Doints out. is the space required. Each cubic foot of liquid oxygen provides 12 cubic feet of gas, thereby taking up only one-twelfth of the space required for gas storage. The plant being installed here will include I 550,000 cubic foot tank.' Swinford said the plant is being constructed in Roseburg because of its central location in the south western Oregon service area, and becausfc of its steady growth pat- fern from the past and potential for the future. "Were a locally owned and operated company," he said, "Which has a lot of faith in Roseburg and is proud to be part of this city." Subdivision Set For Garden Valley Garden Valley is to have its first sub-division. The property, most fumiliarly known by old-timers as the Love apple orchard is now owned by George West of Rose burg. The Roseburg Realty who is handling the division plans to have 12 tracts for sale on the 20 acres. Some of them will front along the North Umpqua. A roadway is now being built by Art Andrus of Glide. The drive will be in a circle down by the river and the center is to be land scaped plantings. A drainage sys tem is to be constructed bordering the Bashford property, reports Ad die Schneider, Garden Valley cor respondent. The first home Is being con structed by Mr. and Mrs. R. C. "Bud" Good. (News-Review photo) City Building During May Total $166,437 Roseburg City building permits for the month of May totalled 55 for a value of $1116,437. School Building At Glide Ups Permits In May Permit to construct a new ele mentary school at Glide in the sum of S-54.532 swelled Douclas Count v building permits to a total of S:ii6,282 for May, a report of county I'lanning coordinator James Mattery reveals. Only one new commercial per mit was issued, that was for a nur sery at the Feed St Seed Store in Canyonville of Horace Thompson and JiMi Burwell. The permit was for $6,000. O. P. Van Horn of 4503 NE Stephens St. took Out a .permit for $1,000 for remodeling of his Derrick No. 1 Service Station at that locution. Van Horn has just completed a remodeling project on his Derrick No. 2 station in Hose- burg on SE Washington Ave. Four dwelling permits were is sued for $19,000. New construction permits were down over previous months ot this year, but wcro considerable ahead of May of last year when 69 per mits totalled $109,462. April per mits numbered 27 for $201,714. Four dwelling permits and one new commercial building were in cluded. The commercial structure is a new ice cream drive-in, being built by the Artie Circle Inc., at 354 W. Harvard Ave., a western chain of, similar businesses. The permit was for $15,800. One dwelling permit for $40,000, issued to It. G. Hansen at 414 W. Elizabeth St., brought the total for the month up substantially. John Sanders took out a permit for a dwelling at- 154 W. Berdine, $16,144; W. llallcraft, 1698 W. Lyn wood, $13,178, and Leo Kowlewskl, 235 W. Center, $16,570. Other permits for miscellane ous work numbered 50, for a total value of $64,747. Of this amount $41,429 was for plumbing. The Artie Circle building was coining along fsst this week as block walls were nearing completion. Cake, president of Equilablc Savings & Loan Associ ation, has announced that ho is In become chairman of the board and chief executivo officer and that Harold 11. Cake, is to become pres ident effective July' 1. Growth of the association, which operates a branch in Roseburg, has made necessary a division of responsibility President Cake re ports. The contemplated change will permit him, he states, to spend more timo in planning broader aspects of the operation and relieve him of some of the administrative duties. Ralph Cake has served on the board of directors since 1922, was made executivo vice president in 1933 and president in 1938.
