Defending Champ Leads Yanks In British Tournament Advance ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (UPI) It was the United States vs. England today in the quarter finals of the British Amateur golf championship. Four Yanks, led by defending champion Dick Davies of Pebble Beach, Calif., and four English men battled their way into the round of eight Thursday, leaving the host Scots on the outside looking in. Daviei, who barely escaped elimination Thursday, drew Brit ish Walker Cupper Michael Lunt as his quarter-final opponent. The two were first off the tee this morning. All-American Match The other quarter-final matches pitted Dick Sikes of Springdale, Ark., against a fellow Walker Cup per, Dr. Ed Updegraff of Tucson, Aril., in an all-American down. Dr. Ron Luceti of South San Francisco, Calif., against Pe ter Green, and David Moffatt against John Blackwell in an all English match. The quarterfinal winners will square off this afternoon for the right to meet in Saturday's 36-hole title round. Davies came perilously close to surrendering his title in both of his matches Thursday. He needed an extra hole before eliminating Scotland's John Wilson in his morning round, sinking a seven foot putt for a birdie-three on the 19th green. In the afternoon, Da vies was four down after 11 holes before rallying for a 1-up victory over former champion John Be harrell of England. Luceti, meanwhile, remained show- alive in the lower half of the draw to retain the Yanks' chanc es of an all-American final. The 26-year-old Army dentist upset English Walker Cupper Martin Christmas, 3 and 2, after downing Scotland's Brian Anderson by the same score. Sikes, the U.S. Public Links champion the last two years, downed Dr. Harry McAnespie of Scotland, 4. and 3, and 19 year-old Fraser Urquhart of Scotland, 2 and 1. Updegraff bested Geoff Dixon of England, 3 and 1, then gained an upset 3 and 2 victory over Ronnie Shade, the Scottish Walker Cupper who was the tournament co-favorite when the shooting began Monday. (UPI) The Compton Invitational Track and Field Meet tonight features a number of superlatives on an en try list which includes six seven foot high-jumpers, five sub-four- minute milcrs, and six 16 foot polo-vaulters. The meet has attracted major attention from track and field fans because of the presence of New Zealand's Peter Snell who may be forced to break his world mark of 3:54.4 if he hopes to win. A fast early pace might leave the door open for an upset victory by one of the following: Jim Beatty, holder of the American rocord at 3:56.3; Jim Grelle, whose best is 3:56.7; Dyrol Burleson, 3:57.6; and Carl Wcisiger, 3:57.3. Snell said this week the way to beat him was to run him into the ground with a fast early pace. Several Los Angeles Track Club runners teamed up with this thought in mind at the recont Cal ifornia Relays in Modesto but Snell outlasted them all, winning in 3:54.9. Wcisiger was second and Beatty third. The high-flying polc-vaultcrs en tered here include: Brian Stern berg, Washington, 16 ft. 7 in.; John Rose, Arizona State, 16 0 W; C. K. Yang, UCLA, 16-1: John Pcnnel, Northeastern Louisiana, 16-6; Dave Tork, Fairmont, W. Va., 16-94; Ron Morris, Southern California Striders, 16-1. games "Baltimore won't beat us. You ran bet on that and you can put it in headlines." Cooling off a bit, Houk conced ed "the Orioles have a good ball club," then hastily added, "but I think we have a better one even with our injuries." Apprised of the Yankee man ager's comments, Hitchcock coun tered: "I'm glad Houk is so concerned about the Orioles. He must really be worried about us to be so concerned." Rally Against Williams The Yanks fell behind early Thursday night, finally tied the score at 2-all in the top of the eighth and then saw the Orioles break the tie in the bottom of the inning when singles by Brooks Robinson and Jim Gentile off loser Stan Williams capped a two run rally. Dick Hall, who relieved Balti more starter Robin Roberts with one out in the eighth, hurled scoreless ball the rest of the way for his second victory, both over the Yankees. The Yankees, who lost Mickey Mantle for at least a month when he suffered a broken bone in his left foot Wednesday night, also suffered another blow Thursday night when starter Jim Bouton was struck on the jaw by Jackie Brandt's lino drivo in the fourth inning. Bouton, owner of a 71 record, was forced to leave the game and had to have 12 stitches taken. Win Fourth Straight - In a ball game where there was less conversation, the Wash ington Senators beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 for their fourth vic tory in a row and their longest winning streak of the season. Larry Osborne's 10th homer with one man aboard off loser Gene Conlcy in the first inning was all the margin Dave Sten house needed for his third vic tory although Ronnie Kline had to be summoned from the bull pen to retire Carl Yastrzemskl for the final out of the game. No other games were sched uled in the American League. Over in the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals climbed into a three-way tie for first place with San Francisco and Chi cago by defeating the Philadel phia Phillies 5-4. The incredible Cubs scored a 3 2 decision over the Giants in 10 innings, and the Cincinnati Reds swept a twi nightcr from the Pittsburgh Pi rates 7-5 and 10-5 in the only other games scheduled.
