MC's Abrahamson Accepts McMinnville Coaching Job Bob Abrahamson, head track coach of the stale champion Myr tle Creek Vikings, announced his resignation to accept a coaching r "," fffM 3 BOB ABRAHAMSON ... track coach resigns and teaching position in the Mc Minnville school system. Abrahamson has been at Myrtle Creek for 13 years, serving as head basketball coach for nine years and head track coach for 11 years. In basketball his teams posted a 132 win against 65 losses for the nine year period including several District 6-A-2 titles. Abrahamson brought the Vikings to power in track, placing second in the state A-2 meet in 1958 and sixth in 1962. In 1963 the Vikings racked up 38 points in the state meet to capture their first state crown. While at Myrtle Creek, Abraham son taught physical education, health and social studies, in addi tion to his coaching chores. At Mc Minnville he will work in the same fields. Abrahamson and his family plan to move to McMinnville sometime in August. He will serve as city recreational director during June and July in Myrtle Creek. Two Douglas County athletes earned varsity letters for the Lin field Wildcats during the various apring sports seasons. Junior Larry Miller and Fresh men Gary Olson were awarded Var sity "L" letters for track. Miller is from Roscburg and Olson was graduated from Rcedsport High School. A total of 17 athletes were presented letters by track coach Hal Smith. In addition, Roy Helscr present ed IT baseball awards, five letters were presented by tennis coach Dick Flood and eight golf awards were issued by coach John Dillin. Fri., June 7, 1963 Cubs, Cardinals Deadlocked With SF Giants In NL Race By United Press International Lindy McDaniel of the Chicago Cubs and George Altman of the St, Louis Cardinals, who figured in a six-player deal nine months ago, figured again today in a three-way tie for the National League lead. The fantastic Cubs, Cardinals and slumping San Francisco Gi ants are all deadlocked for first place and the two men chiefly re sponsible Mr the snarl are Mc Daniel and Altman. McDaniel, an ordinarily weak- hitting relief pitcher who usually gives way to a pinch hitter, won his own gamo Thursday with a loth inning homer off Billy Pierce that beat the Giants 3-2 and gave the Cuba their fifth' straight vie torjr. Started With Cubs Originally, Altman began his major league career with the Cubs but was dealt to the Cardinali last Oct. 17 in the Same trade that sent McDaniel from St. Louis to Chicago. Frank Robinson and Gordy Cole man paced the Cincinnati Reds to a 7 5 and 10-5 twi-night sweep over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the only other NL games scheduled. Robinson belted his 10th and 11th homers in the opener to help Jim Maloney register his eighth victory In the opener and Cole man drove in five runs in the nightcap as Joey Jay posted his third triumph. Joe Gibbon and Don Schwall were the losing pitchers. In the American League, the Baltimore Orioles took over first place with a 4-2 win over the New York Yankee! while the Washington Senators downed the Boston Red Sox 21 for their j fourth straight victory In the only other game scheduled. Tonight the Lockwood motors crew will open a northern swing at Corvallis in a single nine in ning game at 8 on the Corvallis diamond. Then the local nine will move over to Albany for a twin bill Saturday at 6 p.m. Both games at Albany will be seven innings. Sunday the team will be home to play at Legion Field for the first time this season, nosting norm Bend in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
