Coquille Chamber President Discusses Possible Damsite William Ruhman. chairman of the Chamber of Commerce at Co-' quille, was one of the principal; speakers at the dinner meeting of the Camas Valley Farm Bureau! Federation held this week at the Grange Hall. Ruhman spoke on the, proposed dam and lake in Camas Valley. i According to Ruhman. the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers favors the Camas Valley site at present, but the people of Coquille Valley feel that the Fair View site con sidered would better provide irri gation and flood control. Public Mefhodist Women Host Area Group The Umpqua Sub-District meet ing of the Women's Society of Christian Service was held in the First Methodist Church recently with Mrs. Arthur Marsh presiding. The Rev. H. J. Jenkins presented the devotions, reading the 18th chapter of the Gospel of Luke. Mrs. J. M. Boyles, president of the local society, welcomed the guests and members of the Ump qua Sub-District. District officers present at the meeting were Mrs. Steven Romaine, president; Mrs. D. W. Burton, secretary of spirit ual life; Mrs. George Blinkhorn, secretary; Mrs. Eldon Lee, secre tary of literature and publication; and Mrs. William Kissinger, pub licity secretary. Mrs. H. J. Jenkins led the local group of "Bell Ringers" in several numbers. A solo Prayer, was sung by Mrs. Jenkins, accompan ied by Mrs. Gordon Stewart at the piano. Mrs. Arthur Marsh was honored with a past president's pin, pre sented by the sub-district members in acknowledging her four-term tenure as president. This was fol lowed by the installation of the fol lowing officers: chairman, Mrs. Milton DeGroot, Myrtle Creek; vice chairman, Mrs. Karl Hummel, Yoncalla; and Mrs. William Kis singer, secretary - treasurer, of Roseburg. Tiller Ranger District Family Makes Willamette Valley Trip hearings will be necessary, Ruh man said, and urged federation members to make their desires known to their congressional repre sentative. Vic Thompson, State Farm Bu reau membership chairman, stat ed that there are 8.000 members in the state of Oregon. Member ship goal is 10.000. May 27 is set for "dues-due" day, and all mem bers were asked to work on the membership drive. Mrs. Thompson also spoke and stressed the importance of both man and wife belonging to the Farm Bureau, stating that one pro gram the Farm Bureau women can assume is to promote farm prod ucts their husbands raise. Bureau women also sponsor a Dairy Prin cess Contest and a Wool Fashion Contest, the fashion contest being for adults and children of Farm Bureau families. Blaine Johnson, regional direc tor for the area, gave a talk on the dinner and meeting he and Mrs. Johnson had attended at the state legislature. Louis Brady, county chairman, gave a short talk, stating that at the present time there is no insur ance agent for this area. E. J. Strickland, gave a short talk on membership in Douglas County, and John Standley gave a talk on the Water Resources Board. Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Vie Thompson, of Gresham; Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brady of Glen- dale; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Strick land of Myrtle Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brumbach, from East Douglas Federation; and William Ruhman and Ray walker from co quille. Fifty-three members were Dresent. The next meeting will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Booth June 12, beginning with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. By MRS. They spent two days as bouse guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Isiler at McMinnviUe, former resi: dents of Days Creek. Portland Stop Mid While Loeblein reported for a medical checkup in Portland, his wife and children, accompanied by Mrs. Isiler, visited the Lloyd Shop ping center. Loeblein is an employe of the engineering department of the Cow- Creek Ranger District at Tiller. Friends at Tiller, his former home, have learned that A2C Mi chael D. Donovan has arrived In Okinawa where he has been as signed by the Air Force to a fight er squadron. His new assignment Local News ELECTED TO COUNCIL EDMONTON, England (UPI) Mrs. Kay Dixon, who will not be eligible to vote until her 21st birthday in October, recently was elected to the city council. There Is no age limit for councilors. DETERMINED THIEF KANSAS CITY. Mo. (UPI) William Craig Whitney, 56, was arrested recently for allegedly trying to steal a typewriter from the Muchlbach Hotel. His capture occurred only 16 hours after he had been released from the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., to which he had been sentenced three years ago after trying to steal a type writer from the Muehlbach Hotel. At the time Whitney had in his possession a stolen government owned camera. Stark will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary May 19 at the River side Grange hall. Friends and rel atives are invited to call from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The couple has re quested that there be no gifts. Hosting the affair will be the Starks' son and daughter. followed a 30-day leave spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John' Donovan of Camas Valley andi with local friends. He entered the' service following graduation fromi Days Creek High School and was! stationed at FUsworth Air Force Base at Rapid City, S. D. prior to his leave. He reported to Travis Air Force Base in California, leav ing there by air for his overseas base. Mr. and Mrs. Emmitt Belcher are back at their riverside home near Tiller after a visit in Areata, Calif., with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Stanely Williams, and with other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hammer sly drove to Eugene Saturday where the former had his final post-operative checkup. They were luncheon guests of Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Heryford and three sons before returning home. The two men are cousins and Dr. Hery ford, who is a son of Harry Heryford of Myrtle Creek, is a radiology specialist with a medi cal clinic in Eugene. Former Ranger Improves Friends at the Tiller Ranger Station have received word that Ranger Leonard Flower, formerly ranger of the Cow Creek District at Tiller is now improved in health after having been ill and under medical treatment for the past several months. The Flower fam ily moved from here to Shclton in 1958. Mr. and Mrs. John T. Utley and daughter, Mary Louise, enjoyed a weekend trip to the Klamath Coun ty area recently. Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Red ding have moved into one of the two new residences just completed at the Tiller Ranger Station. Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Bryant and three children, who have been residing in the Jack Simison house upriver from Tiller, have moved into the mobile home at the Rang er Motion vacated by the Red dings.
